Hi Have a 48 Chevy Business Coupe and the Tag says Style No. 48-1227B Body by Fisher I think that means it was built in Detroit by the Fisher brothers or something. But does that mean its any different from other 48 Business Coupes? Does anyone here have info on this? Thanks M
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_Body I remember seeing this tag on my mom's 1984 Monte Carlo sill plate when I was a kid.
Fisher Body was absorbed by GM in the 40s, Briggs Body was absorbed by Chrysler in the 40s, Murray was absorbed probably by Ford in the 40s.. These and other body makers supplied bodies to various manufacturers from the beginning of automobile manufacturing. Fisher built all GM division bodies and all GM cars/trucks probably still have the Body by Fisher carriage emblem on the sill plates in the door openings or on the seat frame s.
Hey, The Fisher Brothers, all seven of 'em? were major share holders in General Motors Corp. & I beleve they took turns sitting on the board. One of the reasons that General Motors was so late in abandoning the wooden body construction of their vehicles was the "Fisher Brother's" interests! Not all General Motors vehicles were built with Fisher bodies, Fleetwood coachbuilder & later Fleetwood Body built Cadillac bodies. From 1927 on Fleetwood was owned by General Motors.
