After several owners and added stuff, ive decided that the wiring in my '30 A needs to be re-done. So far ive looked at EZ wiring and Painless. Having little to no experience wiring a car, what would you guys recommend? Whats the best/easiest way to go about completely re-wiring a car?
"color coded and marked from one to the other with what wire goes where." They're all like that. I've used CenTech and EZ, both good. Read this for general tips http://www.painlessperformance.com/wiring.php Put lots of thought into where to route everything for neatness and serviceability. It's not that hard if the kit's instructions are well written. Ralph
If you check around a bit there are a few threads on this. Rebel wire is one well respected brand around here - small town american made quality. Nice price too. other brands i've liked are its-a-snap, american autowire... i'd stay away from painless myself. Instructions for them are all pretty good - i dont really like ez-wire though.
I have installed numerous brands of wire harness and to me Ron Francis is the premium brand out there. To me there is none better.
I have installed 3 Ron Francis kits.. Pricey yes but I believe you get what you pay for.. Also installed a kit bought out of the Speedway cataloge..not so friendly!! John
Rebel X4....10% off for alliance members...great tec. support ,great product, great price.........www.rebelwire.com
Does the Rebel kit come with easy instructions? Looking at Painless, EZ and Rebel- they all look the same to me...
Rebel Wire is a nice kit. I have installed about a dozen e-z wire kits also. Both kits are of good quality. Pricewise, The rebel kit is your best bet. As far as ron francis kits go, Not too long ago, I pulled a 25 year old Ron Francis kit off my shelf and installed it in Faith Grangers "Deuce Of Spades" 32. I haden't opened that box since the day I got it. For a 25 year old kit, That thing was sweet. I would think they are even better now.
I like the Francis kit...but the car is really basic. I really dont see why i need to spend 400 bucks for a 8 circut harness. There's no stereo, a/c, heater, etc. Just the basic lights, guages, etc. I am running a MSD ignition, but other than that....basic stuff.
for a basic car like that you really don't need a lot , you could even do it with a couple 100 foot rolls of wire , junction block and a couple fuse blocks. that is if you you what you are doing! over the years i've made several panels with parts from radio shack and auto parts stores. you would be surprised how inexpensive it can be to do it all yourself.....but i know what i'm doing. my `28 tudor has a fuse panel i made myself , so does my `28 pickup project. you have already stated that you have limited wring experience , so i suggest you stay with a kit i like the Painless # 30001 panel...about $125 , you supply your own wires. i've used at least a dozen or more of them. my `36 has one . it's easy to install and has turn and hazard flashers , horn relay and 12 circuits
x15 on Rebel Wire. I have installed Haywire & Ron Francis both are not bad. For the money buy a Rebel harness & dont look back.
i've never used Rebel , but checking their website the 8 circuit for $135 and the 9+3 for $153 seam like bargains if you go Rebel...you may get by with 8 , but i suggest you go 9+3 in case you ever add anything in the future
someone mentioned Rebel gives Alliance members a 10% discount.... i believe they give "all" forum members 10% discounts i'll be needing a harness for my 50' soon and plan on looking into a Rebel kit..
http://www.americanautowire.com I owned a Small Shop for 25 years, did lots of Hotrod/Streetrod/Restorations too. The American Auto Wire Highway series is in My opinion the very best and easiest to use,the Wire to the Box Has Clamp style connectors ( no crimping ) Ron Francis would be my second choice.
After trying to reach Ron Francis Wire for several days via email and phone calls I checked out the HAMB and found this thread. Never heard of Rebel Wire until one hour ago. Called and spoke to Bob, who was very helpful and answered all my questions. I really like the unterminated plugs available as it lets me make a real nice harness, plus HAMBers get a 10% discount. Can't ask for better than that. I'll be recommending Rebel from now on. Btw, Ron Francis tech support did just return my call and they were polite and helpful but I was already in the process of ordering the Rebel kit so I'm sticking with Rebel. Eli
I just put in a Rebel Wire to replace a Painless Harness. It came with good instructions, I had a couple of questions that tech support answered, and it seemed to be better quality. I'd buy another one.
You guys rock!!! It really is a great product. Thats why I picked it up when Glenn33 decidet to retire. Todd
Affordable Street Rod did me good. Have used Rebel Wire also with no complaints. Both good products and support.
About 22 years ago I built my 39'. I bought a universal fusebox, lots of colored wire and tried to keep the wire colors the same as GM. I just wanted the car on the road! Anyways..22 years later and I still have the "Home-made" wiring in it....even though an "EZ Wiring" kit has been sitting on my Garage shelf for 10 plus years! If it aint broke don't sell it or fix it!
