I saw PS in the "X" on many occasions, and remember the car well.
I must say, I was surprised that images of the car seem to be so rare.
There are a few favorite subjects on which, for myself, I have tried to locate every (modifieds) image that I could discover (Flemke Sr, Wood Bros 21, Donlavey 90/91), and over time I've come across a reasonable number of images of each. After your post the other day, I went looking, in the places familiar to me, for images of the "X", and couldn't find a one. In fact, on the Catamount site I couldn't even find for a second time the image I'd posted here!
Johnny Grady took loads of photos, and I reckoned that, at least, I'd locate on the internet something that he must have taken of PS in the "X", but no soap.

In my peregrinations this evening, I have just come across this:

    (from vintage mods site)

in which alert readers will take note of an active forum member in the upper left photo.

I see that another fellow has just found some nice images of the "X" - well done, Speady.

A question for you guys. What drivers have been active for the longest time? I believe Billy Clarke started at Seekonk in 1948 or 49 and is still active driving in the truck division there, not sure when Red Farmer started but isn't he still active? When did Buzzie start driving?

I stumbled across this thread months ago and love all the nostalgia here. I just finished a short video about racing at the Waterford Speedbowl in the 1950's featuring interviews with people who were there and many pictures as well... I've being researching the track's history since 2005 (www.sids-vault.com) and we started using cameras in 2008. This clip is a small piece of a larger documentary film project (www.vault-productions.com) that we've been working on for a couple of years now and have a couple more to go probably til we're done. Anyway, I thought some of you might find it entertaining so I thought I'd share - here's the direct youtube link:

It looks like this is the last stock car picture I have to share unless we can figure out a way to go back about 50 years so I can take some new pictures. I started taking racing pictures in 1966 but it only lasted 2 years until marriage and 3 kids ended it. I now look forward to going to EMMR every August to a least get pictures of the restored cars. Every picture I have uploaded for your pleasure, ( I hope) were taken by me, some of them were pretty bad since I was just starting in photography in 1966 but I hope everyone enjoyed them.

Hi Neal, yes, those pictures are of West Brattleboro VT. They were taken in 1955. Contact us for more info on them if you need. Thanks Crystal & Jim:)

This thread is specifically marked 60's & 70's modifieds, but we're enjoying all the photos regardless if they are 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's... So...

I was equally enjoying the stories and great pictures on the "Vintage Stock Car" thread (notice there's no years defining the years of "vintage") and this member, "metalshapes", is threatening to close the thread because he feels the thread is going off topic...

"No, when you post on the HAMB, please stay with things that are Relevant and On Topic. The HAMB concentrates on Trad Hot Rods and Trad Customs. (cut off date is about mid '60s in year and buildstyle, so the earlyer Stock Cars are fine)"

Sorry, but this "metalshapes" guy is really being quite rude and unsporting. I may be a new member to this message board, but at least I haven't lost the spirit of this great sport of autoracing and appreciate all of the great pictures and stories. I think this "metalshapes" has lost his way... Sad.

Could it be that you do not yet have the feel OF the HAMB yet? You failed to mention that in his post on the stock car thread that Metalshapes suggested that the Dogfight site would be a better choice for the newer content(where HE states that he posts his newer content)I think what you are considering rudeness is what I would call directness.I see that you just joined us last month. If you were to spend a bit more time on the HAMB and look at a number of threads you may conclude that this thread and the stock car thread have been given a long leash in allowing OT posts as I have. No matter how long a leash given there are some who seem to want to push the envelope farther.I feel there is a point where the moderators must draw a line to keep this site from being an everyone's everything free for all with no direction. There are plenty fo those sites elsewhere. I for one understand that just because I like something that doesn't make it on topic for the HAMB. I hope the "we" in your post wasn't an attempt to speak for all who look at this post as I for one understand that the HAMB has it's limits of content. I hope you will consider this view of the situation. I would hope to see both threads continue as I visit both threads on a regular basis too. I hope I have spoken tactfully. It is not my intent to offend or pick a fight. I would hope the help show the other side of the issue.

"...but we're enjoying all the photos." is what I stated. I'll speak for myself from now on, I apologize. I figured everyone was enjoying all the photos and stories from the past. I joined because I enjoyed it so much and have/had some photos/comments/stories to contribute. Maybe I misunderstood. Thank you for clearing that up for me.

Post 9549 shows an old Danbury photo of a guy called Loud Mouth, painted by Snick... Vinny Pousada used to be the "Snickering Spic" back then, could this be a young Vinny, or is it someone else? Looks like an early sixties photo...who is that guy?

"Rustdodger", could you elaborate a little on this "Dogfight" site? Is it something that is geared toward oval track modifieds? Is that what its called, "Dogfight"?

    Thanks!

To find the dogfight site go to the bottom of the page while you are on the HAMB scroll to the balck band at the bottom of the page, there you will find a link to the dogfight site.Just click on the word "dogfight" and it will take you there. That link will get you to all that you want to know. It is a sister site to this one that is more accepting of newer content that the sixties.Again I don't believe it's my place to manage this site but I do understand the viewpoint of the moderator, and they have provided an option for posting what they consider out of bounds here. My hope is to keep the discussion civil and the threads we all enjoy open!

  24. How the heck does this have to do with us??? We've been posting the same content for years! Whose rattling cages? How did the stock car thread mess end up over here! Please keep the B.S. off this thread.

I just found this site the other day when looking for some Modified pictures from when I was a kid. I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has posted pictures. It has been a real pleasure looking through all 468 pages and reliving it all. I grew up in Richmond and I'm posting a picture from the late 80's of my favorite drivers. I also liked Eddie Crouse and Dennis Zimmerman. It was a blast to see post from Denny on here, I last saw him race in 1968 in a sprint car at a track in the Kansas City area. I was 10 so can't recall the tracks name. Spent time as a kid in Junie Donlavey's shop, Worked on Asphalt Late Models of Roy Hendrick (Ray's son) and Bugs Hairfield (Ted's son) and have written for a few different publications and done some regional TV and Radio work. I have worked the last ten years doing Public Relations for Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica, VA. I work for Bill Sawyer, (Paul Sawyer's son) who also sponsored Tommy Baldwin's Modified first as Richmond International Raceway and the last years as Virginia Motor. The last 12 years I have pretty much done nothing but dirt racing as a dirt fan will tell you, "if you want good side by side racing then dirt is what you want" Again thank you for your great pics but we need more southern cars!!!
Hope you enjoy this shot of Richmond's 4-H boys; Sonny Hutchins, Ray Hendrick, Runt Harris and Ted Hairfield

Hello Brian, Welcome to this site. Enjoyed the picture of the 4-H guys. I considered them all my friends, sadly only Ted is left. This past summer I went to the reunion at Manassas, what a great time I had. Got to see Mel Bradley, Bobby Dobbins, Al Gore (his kids run the place now) and a bunch others too. Also I drove to Richmond and met with Junie Donlavey I tried but somehow I missed Red Foote but I spent quite a bit of time with Ted Hairfield, what a gentelmen he is. Also I went to the races at Southside Friday night, met the Lady promoter (turns out she is the daughter of Wilkerson who was the promoter I remembered), she kindly gave me a pit pass which I appreciated. I got to meet Ray Hendrick's son. I was treated very nicely every where I went and really enjoyed it. Hopefully I can make next years reunion wether it be at Manassas or Southside or South Boston maybe this time I will catch up with Red Foote and for sure I will meet up with Ted and Junie again.

Any way welcome to this site. Denny Z

PS: Just to make sure you know there is also a HAMB Midget and Sprint Car site too.

Yeah Sue is J.M.'s daughter. Denny, I remember seeing you in Iris' Restaurant which was across from Junie's shop. Also I can remember like it was yesterday, The Virginia 400 one year and as a young kid fell asleep. When I awoke my family was there, it was about empty at Southside and My Mom was bent! It seemed that a scoring error had taken the win from you (my Mom said you were screwd) and the win went to Eddie. Do you remember that night? Foote and Loretta were (as of the mid 1980's) the last time I saw him living off of Jefferson Davis highway in Chesterfield County. Southside at this time doesn't appear to be opening, Sue had a mild stroke last December and they're looking for either a buyer or someone to lease it. Oh, one other thing. I remember when you built your last Modified and you painted green because someone else offered to buy the paint if you would paint it that color. I thought it was a sharp looking car. It met it's end at Southside when Winnie Talbert crashed it and it caught fire.

maybe I'll post a pic of my Micro Sprint from 1995 LOL..
