I need to find out what kind of straight axel to get for my 55 chevy american grafitti reproduction car. Any one know (Richard Ruth builder) or some one who knows the 55 chevy as the front suspension and the interior.I really would appreciate this info.
It was the same car in both 2 lane Blacktop and Graffiti .It had a straight tube axle i believe with coil over and hairpins i think .Not sure on the brand though...
Too bad S****e isnt online right now as he could proly tell you what oil and brand of spark plugs the 454 had in it...
well... one of them had a left over L88 427, the two others had 454's all three new crate engines at the time.
There was someone on here a couple of days ago, i think, he had this bad *** 55 and he had a story on how he put a front straight axle under his, had a bunch of pics. Maybe sombody can remember.
Actually Walt the owner of the car that you mention having the "dupe" axle is the admin of the two lane forums. He is definately the most knowledgable of anyone on this topic as he had another of the axles put back under his car by Richard Ruth. Yes I said back under because his car is the actual camera car from the two lane movie and it has undergone a very extensive restoration to bring it back to how it once was in the movie.
I knew Richard, thirty years ago while in calif. I don,t remember the car with a tube axel. I had a 55 Ford Customline with a 427, straight tube axel, five foot ladder bars, ran 11.90 in 1968. Towed it with my 63.5 427 Galaxie that I still have. Starting another 55 I,ve had in my shop since 1979. Great look! Ken PS call 1-800-824-1752. Nice kit with spindes and brakes, 1500.00

Hello,You can get all the answers from Richard Ruth that built the 55 chevys for both movies. His # (209) 383-3190 I just happen to have a graffiti 55 on the cl***ified ads. The ad reads 55 chevy clone American Graffiti/Two lane Blacktop. Check it out.
Not a straight axle on the Blacktop cars or the AG cars that were built afterwards. They were dropped tube axles with coil over shocks. That is why the cars sat so low and most people didnt even notice the axles in the cars unless you saw the magazine articles afterwards.
Richard won't mind his number being shared. It's his business number, and he'll be happy to talk anyone who is interested in his work. He has recently moved the shop, but only right down the same street. If you're in Merced, look him up. He might even be able to tell ya if he worked on the front end of that ol g***er in San Fernando!
I know that the car that they crashed in AG did not have an axle in it. I just saw AG and watched closely as they crashed it. When the camera panned across the the overturned '55 Chevy I saw A arms. No axle.
