I knew most of these guys later on. My dad was the facilities manager for this race track. I grew up there in the later 40s as a kid. When they began to p*** away they knew I collected racing photos from the midwest. Swap meets and friends sharing them. I have over 11,000 photos in my collection.I think it is time to get them out in the world because my family has no interest in them. Kinda hate to see them in the trash bin where I got some of them when people heard they were being thrown away. Some families hated racing so bad that after the guy died, they burned his photos and trophies. I know of two HUGE collections that got burnt up.

  6. This is Mt Lawn Speedway 1946, Hank Naylor from Dayton, Ohio, Car owner Charles Black from Dayton, OH. Charles Black was one of the rare African American car owner/mechanics that ran with the mostly caucasian folks of the Mutual Racing ***oc. He was well liked and accepted a**** the racing fraternity. Everyone knew who the 'Mickey Mouse ' car was.

Don't think it's Blackie's car. Wheelbase is too short and this one has a pre-'36 motor in it.

  12. This is Alva Sweigart before the start of the feature race at Mt Lawn Speedway. Note the dual wheels. They worked ...to well, they changed the rules the next week, 'No dual wheels'. Look at that straight sheetmetal...kinda brings a tear to your eye....the good one....

There is info on the HAMB about this roadster and the fellow sitting in it. I do not recall the name. Sorry. I want to say Ryan might have done a story on Jalopy Journal Home Page. I may be mistaken. Keep digging it's in here somewhere.

Its in pieces right now, its got a Blown SB with a 60s isky blower setup, a 40 front axle and bones, and new front tires. Soon to have hoodsides at a minimum.

hey Harley, I love your track roadster photos. I keep seeing new stuff and ideas. I like to know where the front brake rod goes on this car or did they just used the e brake and it's got split wishbones! I think this is the early's photo I've seen of one (1940). I wonder what the steering box is? also the 31 roadster has A mustash spring. please keep them coming! Jared

I'm told safety equipment often was a leather jacket and a pair of goggles.

  17. Here's an example of 1941 safety technology...the doors on the Mutual Racing ***oc cars were cut out so the driver could crawl out after a flip like this. This is a good way to recognize those cars that ran in the Indiana/Ohio area with the MRA. Really, that's true.

thanks Sam..I thought they might be..I love the way your car sits nice n low in front. Mines only a round 3ins off ground under roll pans at bottom of cowl. You appear to have got it (the ch***is) looking good where it transitions from body to turtleback. Great job!! :)

Just think this has fantastic proportions. I looks long - what sort of wheel base would does this car have?

    Cheers

  22. If one wants a little chuckle, go back to my post #323. Notice how all the people there seem to be concerned about the safety of the driver in the overturned race car?.......except one.

...getting closer to being on the road, finished the (bonnet) hood and the oil lines, only exhaust, polishing of hood, some bits and pieces and she's away. All the time has been worth it. :):):):)

Finally the "Ghost Rider Roadster" made its maiden trip this week, down the crescent and back home. A few friends were over to witness the event and we made a ****y little video (without any planing LOL) of the roadster coming back under its own power. I've been working on softening the ride a bit and setting up the drum brakes this week. The banger ran great and the GM 200c auto looks to be just fine. As I progress with a few little items I will post a better video. Fun, Fun, Fun!
