  1. I remember "capping" meaning to make fun of. It was a popular term, here in SoCal, for about 5 minutes in the mid 70's

I usually say, if you've got $50k it's yours, then you can change whatever you want on it.

From my experience it has been that 95 percent of time the people making those comments are spectators who don't have a car at the event or even own a rod or custom of any kind.

I've been told that I ruined my truck because I chopped it and these trucks are "rare". My comment to that guy was that there still dozens of these trucks working in the fields every day where I lived and they weren't exactly rare. that was 1982 and the neighbor irrigated with one at the time.

I had more than one guy tell my I ruined my truck because it is too low and I won't be able to take it off road or up in the woods.

For some reason or other the unwashed guys with grease on their clothes and a cheap cigarette in their mouth have been the most critical at car shows and they usually travel in pairs. No comments made to those guys.

  6. "If it was mine...."

Ignore everything that follows because it's not worth listening to or getting upset about. This kind of stuff used to get to me but I've learned to let it go because half the time the guy saying it is driving a minivan or something.

I would say "Well let's go have a look at the car that you built". Most of 'em won't say any more

"Thanks for the helpful input – I can tell you're an expert. I'll take everything you've suggested into consideration. Now let's go over to your car so I can critique it."

"What?, You say you didn't drive your car because ... (fill in the blank with whatever BS the guy is handing you)?" "Got any recent pictures? I'm certain I can make some suggestions from your pics."

"Oh, no photos either? Well, do you have any photos online?, because I have a smart phone, so I can pull them up. What's the url?"

He should have walked away at this point.:)

I like to walk off in the middle of what ever they are saying.

  20. Pretty difficult not to say anything when someone makes a comment - it's also often hurtful to hear, not the constructive but the destructive comments. If you don't like what someone has done with their ride, and they haven't asked your opinion, save your insults. A person who dishes out that kind of talk, like what Gotgas mentioned about the "everything in front of the license plate" **** deserves to be put in their place and told what a rude ***hole they are being. If they can criticize your car, you sure as hell can criticize their behavior.

This where a copy of "Rosetta Stone" would come in handy. Imagine some lop-eared **** telling you something then you rattle off in a foreign language. The look on their face would be worth the learning. Any restorers reading this thread get **** all the time, right? How "...the screw heads are supposed to..." and "That color is off just a couple shades..." and the ever popular "...and my uncle's car had the...".

I personally look forward to genuine discussion and comparisons when it involves restoration. In my line the facts can be so obscure that it takes a rare or often missed detail in a picture that you've looked at for years. The rest are just haters. Accomplished pros know how and when to share opinions.

i have found that there are two comebacks that politely tell someone to go eff themselves they are; "i'm sorry you feel that way" and "that is a you problem". either will shut them up.

My favorite come back occurred about 1963. A friend had a 60 starliner all jacked up in the back. The rear axle was painted white so that you could easily see it. (a short lived fad)

Somebody made a snide remark about his white rear and he said "If you can beat it, I'll paint the rear any color that you want." He just walked away.:D

I have a friend who uses the JefreyJames approach, although in much more civilized and polite manner.

"Does the term '**** You' have any relevance in your life?"

I'll be honest, I'm allmost unable to keep my mouth shut when I see poorly/dangerously/cobbled built cars. I once saw a RR that the guy was way proud of how ratty it was. He was talking about how he liked to take his kid for rides in it. Where heres where the problem came up for me. This truck didn't even have a floor in it. The seats were mounted on a piece of square tubing. The dude was braggin how cool it was to be able to see the driveline while he was driving.

Well in short, I landed in the middle of his *** for puttin his kids life in such danger to be "cool and trendy".

poor built is one thing. **** built is another all together.
