I have a pile of generators and starters from early 60's Fords I need to get rid of. Are they worth anything for the copper or should I just throw them in my recycle pile of metal ? We have a city clean-up day I normally dump all of my junk off at. I really don't want to dis***emble them for the copper. I don't know if the generators are good and if they are desirable. They are 12V. I normally replace them with an alternator that has an integral regulator in my 60's Fords.
I recently had a hard time finding a cheap generator core to rebuild. Everybody around here threw them away. The cores on Ebay were too costly not even counting the shipping. I finally found a cheap one. You might try the HAMB cl***ifieds or Ebay. I'm sure that there are more people that would like to have a cheap core. Some of the cores that I was out bid on went for more money than I would give or that you could get at the s****pers. I just hate to see them melted down but I understand you wanting them out of your road.
Yes, my local s****yard pays more for starters/generators than for regualar short steel. They're worth sorting out.
If they are '57 to early '60's Ford generators, those are exactly what a guy needs to convert his flathead to 12 volts. DO NOT THROW THEM AWAY. Can you save them until I come up for Back to the Fifties? Keep me a half dozen of the cleanest generators please.
they buy them as electric motors, a lot better than tin or short steel. best bet is to try to find them a home as several have suggested. i bet you won't have to try too hard.
0.50 a pound at the local recyclers here in Wa I have the same problem, no one wants to give $10.00 ea. at a swap meet but the s**** yards will.
It's kinda sad how everything is about money. Where are you at in Minnesota, I wouldn't mind buying a few generators to rebuild.
My local shop has started charging $100 core charge for generators if you don't bring yours in. The last one I had rebuilt cost me $185. They are definitely becoming an "unobtainium" type part around here.
