The car is a '28 RPU that was last tagged in '53. It was used as a delivery truck for a auto parts store in L.A.in the late '40s & early '50s. I bought it from the parts store owner's daughter in Glendale. I've been collecting parts for quite awhile and until recently I didn't have a build style chosen. Well now that I been spending time on the H.A.M.B. I think I've got to go with "traditional". I'll nix the vette rear end and dig out the Halibrand QC that's been gathering dust. I already have the front pieces (heavy '32 axle, hairpins etc.), my current undecided is how to spring the rear. I don't want to see coil overs or coils at all, and what with the QC I think a cross-spring is out. I want it to sit lower than that will allow. It will be full fendered so I'm now thinking quarter elliptics. Please feel free to give me your input and any pics that might help!
I like the trailing arms idea, there's just so little room in front of the axle. I can see QEs on the bottom of the frame, out of the way. I'm hoping someone here has none something similar. I still have all the body options to decide on too. I really need to nail as much down ahead of time, or I'll get sidetracked and go backwards if I don't. The only other body mod that's decided is I'm lengthening it 5", 2" in the doors & 3" in the rear quarters.
i say pete and jakes ladder bars and a t rear spring z the frame just a tad (4inches) and put the spring behind don't want to go too low as to block that nice rear end tk
You could go with a "spring behind" the rear axle which is a traditional way of adding a different rear end...you will have to lenghten the frame by the amount that the perches extend beyond the axle...sound complicated but it isn't really... Mainly because a Model A frame is straight on the horizontal...
Sorry..quick change in Model A will need a T spring...will not clear with rear mounted spring...missed the Q/C...
This is my '31 truck with spring behind...sorry not a good descriptive pic...but if the snout of the Q/C was there I'm afraid it would hit...maybe I'm missing something....
As far as body/paint goes it would be cool to pay homage to letter it up with the old parts store name on it. Maybe a 50's style hot rodded push truck?
i have a 10 leaf A spring under mine, but mine is channelled and Z'd...but the QE's sound sick man, i thought about running those out front too. if you need some inspiration for a full-on custom suspensiion, check out B*** customs...the guy some crazy stuff...just a thought. good luck on your project
Finally getting back on this project. I closed my company down after 35 years. Now I have the time to devote to hot rods and fishin'. Decided on Posies quarter elliptics and triangulated 4-bar for the rear. Got a pair of spindles from a HAMber and a buddy donated some '48 brakes complete with drums. I have to get this thing off the ground cuz I need to finish the fabrication part while I still have my building available. If and when I sell the rest of the machinery, the rent will be the bulk of my retirement income. I'll be posting updates weekly.
4 bar and quarter eliptics seems like a lot of work. Model A spring on a late rear end ('40?) with a QC. Too easy. Pete
I'm sure that would be true if my axle tubes had the original bracketry, they don't. I'd still have to round up all the rest of the hardware. I'm confident with my choices.
