Feb 3rd, 1959 is commonly referred to as the day the music died. On that day, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson died in a plane crash.

What we need to keep in perspective here is that all the great ones from rock and roll stood on the shoulders of the delta bluesmen.

Toady, the last surviving member of that uniquely American southern bluse sound has passed away.

Today truely is the day the music died.

Man! He played here in Little Rock just last week, I think. I wanted to go but had to work. He was definately one of the masters.

I saw him in Austin in 2008. They had to lift him onto the stage. But man, there was nothing wrong with his fingers.

That is some sad news. They say history repeats itself, but that will be hard to do with the delta guys.

I had Pinetop lined up to play the Manifolds on Main show back in Sept 2010 but the check writer (City of Irving) pulled the plug on the deal at the last moment.

    Almost...

Not just "another one" of the masters of the original delta blues... This time it's the last one who has passed away.

Just read this, very sad but not unexpected. I saw him play and talked with him afterward just a couple months back. Great guy and a major talent. What a touchstone to the '50s Chicago masters.
I do want to correct one thing, the Delta Blues will still live as long as Honeyboy Edwards is still alive. :D

I had the honor of playing with him about a year and a half ago. We had my bachelor party at Blues on Grand in Des Moines, and he was in town for the blues fest. A few buddies and I threw together the gig the night before I got married and they brought him down to hang out. He watched us for a few songs then deemed us worthy to jam with. Just to be in the same room let alone get the nod for a solo still gives me goose bumps. A true legend and was truly at the Big Bang of the rock and roll world. We owe so much to him and his peers for their vision, and influence in all that moves and shakes.

Truly one of the Blues greats. We were lucky to have him here in Austin for the last coouple years. Got to see him several times at Antones. He never lost the magic in his fingers even at 97. He will be missed by many.

  16. Sorry to hear that. I've read about Pinetop in blues magazines, but never
got to see one of his shows.

The old names in blues and rock are getting older now.
I looked some up to see ages.....B B King is 85 and Buddy
Guy is 74 (saw them in a show together last summer).

Honeyboy Edwards is 95, Little Richard is 78, Chuck Berry is 84
and Eric Clapton is now 65.

He will be missed but he played until near the end. He outlasted most of the legendary blues players......RIP "Pinetop"

The HAMB never ceases to amaze me. You cats are are a hip group of individuals man! I love the blues! I love Pinetop Perkins. I love those sessions Pinetop did with Muddy Waters, and Johnny Winters! "Pinetop said it you know the blues got soul-one day the blues got pregnant and they named the baby Rock & Roll"! God bless you Pinetop! Tell Muddy, Hooker and the Wolf we all said hello!

Pinetop had so much rythem that it fell from his fingertips. I was honored to be at his 90th birthday party, Bob Margolin put it together. Just amazining talent, i remember him from 30 years ago layin down the rythem for Muddy Waters. I have an old bootleg of him from ebbits' field jamming with Muddy and BB King at about 4 oclock in the morning, easily some of the best blues piano ever recorded. You could tell that both Muddy and BB were in awe of him and his playin. I'll put that music on now, fill the shop with his sound and shed a tear for the greatest and humblest of the blues pianists.
Pinetop Perkins, may he rest in peace and God bless.
