exhaust after fentons on 1954 chevy i6

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by JAKE'S-Pumpkinella54, Mar 23, 2011.

  1. OK ... so intake is on and fenton headers are on .... heres my question . How do you guys run exhaust on these chevys ..?? I was planning on running them straight back , along drivers side . Plan was to get porters . But then i spoke to a respected hotrodder and he told me to run them down both sides as if it was a v8, with an h pipe . either way its not going to run past the rear wheels .. this car is going to be lower than it is now ..

MY reasons for running it down the drivers side .
    - straight shot
    - cleaner look
    - wont block drive train ( doing a swap eventually )

whats the reason for an h pipe on a 6 ??

what mufflers are you running ...?

what size pipe you running ?

are you happy with your set up how much clearance do you have ??

thanks for help ... pics are great!

  2. feel free to pm me with info :D

  3. Depends on the sound you want. Do aa youtube search under "split exhaust". I think one of the better sounds comes from 1-3/4" tubing with short galss packs fairly close to the headers. If you really want them to crack and pop run 1-1/2" after the gl*** packs. Todd

  4. thanks tug ... im liking the porter muffler

Another suggestion that I've seen over on the Inliners site is to run one side as a straight pipe, 1.75" or 1.5", and the other side same size w/ a gl***pack fairly close to the front. No crossover or H pipe. Gives a very distinct "dual-tone" kind of sound.

Also, if there's room, run them both out the same side, so they'll know its a six! :D

    Later, *****6

You asked for opinions, so here's mine.......turnouts in front of the rear wheel ****! Full tailpipes are required for a good rapping tone.

I had my manifold blocked and split, then had the pipes ran down each side of the frame rails. No mufflers, just two 2inch straight pipes all the way back.

Both pipes down the driver's side used to be called "Shotgun pipes". This is what is on my car in the Avatar picture. They are easier to install because you don't have to run a pipe to the p***enger side past transmissions and drive shafts. And like others have said, people know it is not a V8 anyway.

I havent ran it yet, but on my ford 200 I6 I have a split header and will be running 2 inch all the way back into 12 inch cherry bomb gl*** packs. The cherry bombs are like 25 bucks a piece, and when I put them on a 352 they BARK! I know its comparing two very different things, but I liked the 12 inch cherry bombs on my truck. Run them closer to the header for them to bark more.

The only complaint that I have about runing exaust and then dumping it compared to running it all the way out is the sound will bounce around under the body of the car. When I run the rest of the exaust on my falcon it will be after I lower it so I can run it all the way out.

An H-pipe will equalize pressure between pipes and probably makes it sound lamer. In Chevy six that fires evenly to both pipes anyway it probably won't make much powerwise either, unless you're not racing. So I'd forget the H-pipe.

I have a 235 with split manifold and straight 2" pipes to the rear. Tail pipes look brand new and later I'm going to swap in a 261, so I'm keeping them, even though most say 1 3/4" would be better. Actually it sounds pretty nice now and crackles neatly on deceleration, but I think I'll have to put in mufflers to get it through inspections. I'm thinking about using two gl*** packs of different length.

Slit 6s have a very distinctive sound. That was the whole point of slitting the manifold. You can tell a split 6 from a block away. It would be sacrilegeous to add a balance tube and ruin that sound. Balance tubes were never a nostalgic hotrod idea until much much later.

Most of my customers wanted them run down both sides with pencil tips under the bumper. Slit 6s are supposed to rap. You need long tail pipes to get that. School buses are not slit but have you ever heard one go down a long grade? They rap like Snoop Dog. The long tailpipe does that. If you want it to sound like the 50s, you have to build it like the 50s.

Porters sound awesome and are great quality.
The driver's side should fit using the factory exhaust. I usually mirror the tailpipe for the p*** side and custom bend a pipe to fit from the fenton header to the muffler. Pretty easy if you know what your doing with the bender. I have patterns for the factory exhaust if anyone needs them.

My plans are very simular. Fenton header to Porters and out through 2" pipes. Why 2" pipes? I have no idea. Anyone care to talk about the differences in pipe diameter?

Great thread Jake - but Oprah scares me

There are 2 early chevys with 235's in them running around this way .both are stock cam motors with offy intakes and fenton headers, one has smittys and one has straight pipes. The one with straight pipes sounds way better. I'd try straight pipes and if you don't like the sound cut in mufflers. An H pipe with kill the sound don't do it

  22. thanks for the feed back. my reason for staying on the drivers side is 1...i plan on upgrading drive train. and this car is gonna be way lower than it is now ... so i thought it would be easyier to tuck everything up against the belly of the car ..on drivers side...

so far . Im notdoing the h pipe . But i am going with porters ..

Lets talk about tailpipes!!!!!!!!!! Im low in back and going lower . how do you people run your tail pipes >>??

I got 2". mufflers under the seat area. pipes over the rear and out the back. wide enough apart to clear the license plate area. but not wide out to the outside. I think when I did them the spare tire well was in the way of doing that?

My car is low, but not crazy, broken looking low. Sometimes the pipes get dragged in the middle of the car. But the rear exit never got damaged.

Turnouts before the rear wheel will drive you nuts on long road trips if the pipes bark a bit. And those noise canceling ear muffs look rather ****y when a photo that someone else took of you cruising down the road with them on shows up here in an event thread.

I'm putting Porters on the 48 with pipes all the way out past the back bumper. I'll pretty leave it up to my muffler guy to pick the right size pipes as he hasn't missed on any of my rigs yet. Those will be behind the cast split manifold from Langdon's.

  26. thanks guys !........ ive see some people run them under the diff. .. pros and cons ... thanks ... anyone one have picks ...? i look at how chevygirl did hers.. still looking around ...

My '53 BelAir has 2 inch pipe all the way, with 30 inch Walker gl***packs and tailpipes exiting below the bumper on opposite sides of the car. Mellow under cruise conditions, but sounds like an early '50s Jaguar under full throttle.
