I've checked the Hemi tech section w/o a clear answer so I'm putting this question out. I've got a 354 w. truck heads. ANYONE KNOW WHERE'S THE BEST LOCATION TO DRILL WATER OUTLETS ON THE INTAKE FLANGE of a stock iron 4 bbl intake. between 2/4 & 1/3 or 5/7 & 6/8? Looks easier to do on 5/7 & 6/8 but is there a difference in cooling front to rear on heads? thanks and all best
The stock location is between the 1st & 2nd runners on 51-4 intakes, that is probably the best place & would look cleaner. Drivers side in the back could possibly cause hose/carb linkage problems
You may want to check with Tom Waters. He is on this board. He makes an adapter to drill and tap the front of hemi heads for water hoses. This may be an alternate solution for you. Al
My first question would be what intake are you using. Using truck heads, you could actually come from the center crossover passage. Or as mentioned, I do have an outlet kit to take water from the front of the truck heads.
thanks for the input folks. Tom, I'm hoping to use an oem iron 4 bbl intake and mill/drill/tap a couple of ports on the flanges kinda like the weiand 2x4 intake has (which I've used in the past). Planning to just run the single quad on this latest mill.
I'm rebuilding a 392 for a pickup and need soadvice can. can anyone tell me howbmuch I can shave off the heads and still be safe with compost head gaskets ? I'll use the stock cam and 58 pistons. Anyone help me out with advice on this? Also, where can I find steel valves at a decent price?
First question is why do you want to cut the heads? The more you cut the more potential problems you can have with the intake. If you are looking for compression this is the wrong place to find it. I sell SS valves, send a pm if you want a price. .
Yes I need some valves. Whatbdo u get for them? Why is shaving the heads the wrong way to gain comp? Seems to me there isn't a cheeper way to get a little more isn't it? Any better ideas I'd be glad to hear them please Wait for your reply and opinion.. If u would I'd appreciate a repley to my address. Mel@moparmel.com Thank Christineman
Might be a bit cheaper shaving heads & OEM cast pistons, but probably better to get pistons in the right C/R. Many C/R ratings with stock pistons are optimistic.
As noted, cutting the heads/block is a 'cheap' way to gain a little compression, but cheap now can be an issue later, like when you realize that you now need to spend another $150 on pushrods... So, go ahead and take 0.050 off and you'll get about 1 point....alot of variables here so it is not exact. If everything else is stock you are not likely to see/feel a difference. Save the cutting and fussing as well as your money. Just my 2¢ .
Before you "shave your heads", I suggest you read through this thread : http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=570929&highlight=hemi+intake I believe that the general consensus is that these kinds of problems were caused by shaving the heads and/or intake manifold. Do you really want to get into this situation? Don't do it, if not for yourself, at least for the poor sucker who ends up with these parts.
