I am wanting to build a small garage/ shop in my back yard for me to work on my stuff at. I have 2 shops but are miles away from home. I would like something here at home so I am much closer to my projects. I don't need anything real big or fancy. I am also wanting to use mostly wood if possible and I would really like to make this shed appear to be vintage hot rod themed. I am lookingfor something I can fit about 2 cars in with a fairly tight squeeze. has anyone on here build their own shed and if so what did it cost you? how did you do it and what demensions? Please post pics. Thanks
There is a "sister" board to this one called Garage Journal,...they can help answer your question http://www.garagejournal.com/ It's a good site, I am a member, lots of good info.
I built a 30x40 splitface block garage with a 9/12 pitch roof that gave me a room 14x40 upstairs. But that does not include electrical and insulation.
In this area right now there are guys who put up garages or pole buildings that will do it for less than you can buy the material and do it yourself. The local thrifty nickel/trader papers are full of adds. It wouldn't suit everyone but I've been eyeballing a 40x60 Quonset hut style shop with a 10x14 roll up door and two walk ins for 9500. Used but taken down and ready to put back up. As I live in the middle of a farm it would fit right in out here. It might not cut it in a restricted neighborhood though.
i built a two car shop/garage a few years back from a kit bought at a lumber supply place, it came with two roll up doors, one man door, two windows and the roofing, also it came with 2x4 studs, OSB sheeting and the trusses, i think it was around $3000, today if i was to go that way again i would not sheet the walls in with OSB as you still then have to put something over that, instead i would use ranch board or some other kind of sheeting that would double as siding, i also made the header for one of the roll up doors strong enough to pull engines, having said this i plan to use two of my 40ft containers placed 30ft apart as the start of another shop, so i'm checking out craigslist for used trusses, also i have bought new trusses from a truss company that were not picked up for $400, they were sizzor trusses for a 24x24 shop, they had a sale and sold everything cheep, must of had 10 truss packages for sale.
