I'm clearing out a bunch of miscellaneous parts I'll probably never use, and a**** a bunch of stuff marked for late Falcons, Mavericks, and Granadas, I found these: Are they speedometer gears? I'm wondering if they should go in the keep pile, the p*** on pile, or the junk pile. Thanks, Dave
Okay, I'll keep 'em then. Thanks! I ***ume they're color coded. Can anyone tell me which colors mean what? -Dave
Should be different teeth count for calibrating your speedo after tire size or rear gear change. Drew
If your worrking on a Ford with a mechanical driven speedo, these gears will make your day. The tooth count on the gear changes MPH on the speedo faster or slower. Keep them.
I think I'm going to see if I can dial-in the speedo on my Falcon first; but I'll happily send you the leftovers. -Dave
The tooth count should be on the gear somewhere. IIRC it's on the end of little shaft. You should keep 'em!!!
As can be seen by the angle of the teeth, these are all for the same rotation. With Ford, it wasn't as easy as changing the gear on the cable. You can change the angle on the gears a little but to get beyond a certain range, you also had to change the output shaft on the transmission. I was working at a Ford dealer in 1979 when one of the salesman sold a customer a vehicle and told him we would install the towing package on it. The trailer hitch, lights, and heavy duty radiator weren't any problem. After the rear end was changed, the speedometer was way off and we couldn't get a gear to get it right. The input shaft would have had to be changed. It was cheaper to have a speedo shop install a gear reduction unit.
Check the Mustangs Unlimited catalog, they sell the gears and the color codes are ID'd in their catalog. As mentioned earlier, tire size/gear ratio, as well as which spiral gear is installed in the trans determines speedo accuracy. If I remember correctly, the T-5 only offered about 3-4 gear options. Of course, it took me 4 tries to get the best calibration!
