Vacuum pump

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by redlineracer42, Mar 27, 2011.

  1. Hi,Kinda off topic but it seems a couple years ago someone told me about that new Mustang Cobras run an air pump that can have the wires reversed and use it for a vacuum pump/crankcase evac. system on my Chevy. Am I dreaming this or can some of you Ford guys help me out? Thanks Redline Racer

I know that Ford Powerstroke trucks use a vacuum pump. You can pick them up on ebay.

Lots of bracket racers use them, I had a 780hp 505 bbc and it picked up 30hp just bolting on a crankcase evac system. Oil pressure seem to move up and down on dyno pulls with out it, and was rock solid with evac system in place.

I have since sold the car, and the dyno time was during that transition. I believe it was moroso. I can find out.

I use the Cobra style pump on my OT car, pulls 4-5" Hg on 12v. No need to reverse the wires, it has in/out ******s to connect 3/4" id rubber hose on both inlet and outlet sides. Needs a slight voltage drop to run constant, they will overheat in about 1/2 hr on 14 v, melts the brush holder. Here's a typical pump mounted under my dash...

PN# on mine was Delco 215-425, Cobra pump is basically the same with slightly different outlet locations.
Around $100 new from Amazon when I bought it.

What do you do with the plumbing side ? Do you just **** air out of a valve cover and the other side into the open atmosphere , or do you return it back into the carburetor ?

Usually does not go back to the carb, but to some kind of catch can with a coalescing agent or at least an exhaust filter, due to oil mist that is pulled out as well.

Hmm, catch can first before the carb ?

Crankcase vacuum pumps are used in apps involving higher cylinder pressures, such as blown or turbo motors, to improve ring sealing. They aren't intended as positive crankcase ventilation systems, so there is no need to route back to the intake. It's mostly used for racing, although I ran one on my avatar's blown six, which was a street motor. Most are belt driven, but apparently electric ones are now available for less parasitic loss.

Sorry, don't mean to highjack the thread. Caring on.
