    If I'm not mistaken, I think it's technically illegal to modify the bumper in any way just about anywhere...

    I'm pretty sure that it isn't legal to remove the bumper and replace it like many pre-runners do here.

    I don't think it's that clearly defined or enforceable though?

    I remember being told that by someone in the know one time but I can't remember who or where though.

  12. With 60,000 deer/vehicle collisions in Minnesota annually, you see a lot of guards like that up here. Especially on big semis.

    brush bars, deer bars, dumbass bars,,, all amount to the same thing.

    as far as modifying a bumper, i cant say for MN, but in my home state of WI, about the only law i can think of off the top of my head is you cannot change the stock height of the bumper.

    example is on a lifted 4x4 you need to lower the bumper to keep the stock bumper ride height from the ground...

    on a lowered car... hell i dont know.
    i'd venture to say that 99 of 100 cops wouldnt even know what the hell came stock on an old car

    The 'pre-runners' are the guys who go out a day or two before big desert races like the Baja 500 and 'prerun' the course to check conditions and do research for the racers. Toyota also released a 'pre-runner' model Tacoma which looks like a 4x4 (big wheels/tires, fender flares) but is only 2wd. It's sort of a poser truck for posers. That said, I like my Toyota 4X4. Anyhow, I'm way offtopic and I apologize to the mods, but I figured some of you might be interested. I don't see how you could put a 'pre-runner' bumper on anything and call it traditional, though...

    Thats my daughters truck and her Mom was told the bumper was illegal, I don't live in MN so I had no clue.

    I talked to the local sheriff yesterday... front bumper height in the front is 25in from the ground (to the highest part of the bumper)... hers is 30in. wish I wouldv'e known that BEFORE I sent it to her...

    Anybody near Eveleth MN wanna chop 5in. outta that bumper?!

    So they are interpreting the law to mean you can't have MORE than the minimum legal requirment?
    Does he have illegal bumper over riders on his squad car? (the ugly add on push bars like most cop cars have)
    That's just fuckin stoopid.
    But typical of cop mentality...

    Did I say yet today that I hate fucking government?

    Government = biggest GANG in town.

    This might help, if you can understand legalese:

    http://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/stats/169/73.html

    Looks like the bottom edge of the original (or replacement) bumper has to be 25 inches or less from the ground. If it's too high, you can add an auxiliary bumper below it that's 25 inches or less. I think. This crap is so damn obtuse I can barely understand it and I'm a frickin' editor.

    I think it's not so much an issue of aftermarket bumper, but a lift kit issue.

    Steve.

    I think whoever you talked to is reading that law all wrong. Which means he's citing a bunch of people wrongly :eek:
    It says;
    ...bumpers required under this section shall not exceed a height of ...(2) 25 inches on any four-wheel drive multipurpose type vehicle, ...or pickup truck as defined in section 168.011, subdivision 29, when the vehicle is being operated on a public highway. The height of the bumper shall be determined by measuring from the bottom of the bumper, excluding any vertical bumper attachments, to the ground.

    "The height of the bumper shall be determined by measuring from the bottom of the bumper, excluding any vertical bumper attachments, to the ground."

    That says to me you have to have SOME of the bumper 25" from the ground or less. that's all it says

    Then it says;
    ...A vehicle which has an original bumper which does not exceed a height of 30 inches may be modified by attaching a full width bumper to the regular bumper to meet the height requirement. The attached bumper must be at least 4.5 inches in vertical height...

    I think this 30" measurement is again "... determined by measuring from the bottom of the bumper, excluding any vertical bumper attachments, to the ground."

    It's in a sneaky way saying you can't jack up the car/truck till the BOTTOM OF the stock bumper is more than 30" above the ground.
    Not the maximum height.
    I think that Sheriff's reading it all backwards!

    Good luck with it... Sheriff's usually are of the opinion that their interpretation of a law IS the law whether it is right or wrong. "Tell it to the judge! etc."

    I wonder if they have something similar to this CA exhaust law to stick on it too?

    "(California DMV) Exhaust Pipes
    27152. **The exhaust gases from a motor vehicle shall not be directed to the side of the vehicle between 2 feet and 11 feet above the ground."
