I bet every state has more than one way to address the situation. When I moved here I just went in and asked what I would have to do if I drug an old rusty body in from a ranch and used it on a hand built car. They told me exactly what process I could use.
I think almost every state has rebuilders title or homebuilt titles, try one of those angles. Part of your problem is that you assume your car is legally yours and technically that's kind of a gray area if you don't have a title to show ownership.

  3. you can always take your car to dmv and have it vin verified or your local chp . they ll do it free

    Dave,
A few months back I took your advice and used Bruce to get my '50 truck on the road... easily the best $50 I've spent on my project. It was effortless. Thanks for posting the GotTags contact info.
    Cheers,
    Nick

can you get a build title? i know they have those here in michigan, Like if someone builds their own motorcycle trailer or car, the state police comes out and inspects after it passes you just go get a built title for it, may be hard to insure though idk never done it myself. also it may be hard for you to pass safety and emissions requirements. just call jay leno ask him how he gets his stanley steamers registered.

Just be glad your not in FL. It's as bad or worse, specially bringing a car in from a no title state like GA.

Apply using a Towers Lien/abandoned property paperwork and then "Buy" your car from a Towers auction. It helps if you know somebody with a towers license or Wreckers license.

Fwiw I bought my A sedan without a title. First thing I did was get the vin verified (by a service not by a cop) and then paid a titling service to do the rest. Cost me less than $150 and I didn't even have to step into a DMV office. Now I've got a legit title that has my name on it without having to do any bogus bullshit.
