You have talent. I'd suggest that you go to shows with samples and a wagon with your striping kit. Hit up local car and bike clubs. Work will not come to you until you bust your ass out in the field and get a good reputation. Here's a pearl for you... Only in the dictionary does success come before work.
the fastest way to get stripeing jobs is start stripeing something at a show, doesnt even matter what it is... plop down somewhere and stripe a garbage can, and if your any good at all you'll have jobs lined up for the rest of the show
Here's my $0.02 worth. I've noticed at shows where a striper was working, there's always spectators hangin' around.. Some are probably checking out the stripers work, deciding if they want them to stripe their car, etc. Why don't you go to a show, pick out a car, show the owner your work, make them a deal like " let me put a couple of stripes on your car for free/cheap...etc" ,just for the exposure. I'd bet while you're working on the car ,people will stop & look..Some of the gawkers just might become customers... Maybe some business cards or flyers laying in your striping box..if ya got it , a snapshot portfolio of your work for people to look through.. Really talented stripers seem to be in demand... But , what do I know ...I can't even draw flies.... Just a thought Good Luck.. Stan
Bring some dead cell phones with you, start striping the backs or cases, you may get some work doing that when some one sees your samples, maybe some sold pocket books from a thrift store as well, sneakers etc
I've been a pinstriper since 1971...don't go to shows anymore..too old to get up and down and deal with the guys wife about how she wants the color to match her fingernails.....for years I'd find someone with a car that was a home build and not high dollar...I'd tell him I'll stripe if for free...if you don't like what it looks like, I'll wash it off with mineral spirits....never washed one off and it always led to other work you could charge for...NEVER WORK THE SECOND CAR FOR HALF PRICE...set your price and stick with it...remember your their to make money and get a name known.......alwys tell them if they don't like it after one side is done, they owe you nothing and wash it off and move on........now I strip by appointment only...good luck..take pictures i you have them but seeing you actually strip is worth a lot more..............DUN BY DON SIGNS...Mobile, Al.
Why not post some of your work on the Friday Art Show ? Many Talented artists here on the Hamb , a couple have made the grade with a little encouragement from the folks here ... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=576169&highlight=friday+art&showall=1
Man, these people on here make this old man look awful.........I do a few cars I can be creative on, but most work is done for local body shops...It's all factory double or triple lines..sometimes it may have a little flair at the end........these guys are good...always amazed me how people could draw...my son has a Tattoo shop here in Mobile...he can draw and Tat just about anything you want...some of his portrait tats are something to see......I never was much of an artist...used patterns, but back in the day I'd strip 10-12 cars a day in the at shows.....I was super fast...I could look how someone was dressed and tell if they wanted a conservative job or something wild...........I'd usually throw something on quick and say..How you like that?...if they liked it, I'd wash it off and do a good straight job and be gone.......Age and aching joints has slowed it all down......I still love the look on peoples face after I pull along line or finish a job......maybe thats what keeps me doing it, it's still fun.
