Any 289-302 headers will work. The only main difference is the timing gear cover in the front. The 65 and newer covers have a plate that goes between the water pump and the cover and the 63 motor does not. the pump bolts directly to the cover. Compression ratio will be a bit higher in the 63 motor, and the heads originally do not have hardened valve seats.

  2. Put a 460 with a C6 and forget about it

I think you have a 260 and may have a 6 bolt bellhousing.
The best thing to do is pull the timing cover if leaking in front and it maybe just the timing chain and replace the front seal.

They will bolt to the heads but I'm not sure they will fit to the car. What I mean is the tubes/header dumps may hit the frame or suspension or steering.

Since Ford never put 260's in full sized Galaxys but did put 289's in 64 and 1/2 up, I would be willing to bet good money (up to 50 cents) that it's a 289. Likely the one that came in it. As it's a 3 speed manual the tranny will work with most any Ford engine. Just get the bell houseing that matches the engine you swap to. That particular 289 may be of great intrest to a Mustang restorer so don't just junk it out.
A front seal R&R is an easy job on that car.

do you have a source for this info, im not doubting you, its just because i have seen websites that say they came with a 260 and 289 and websites that dont list a 260 at all.

    I would just drive it.

I have a 64 Galaxie with the OG 289 and it runs great, im just cruising though.

I know headers on those frames is really really really tight - ask me how i know :D, i sent em back to the company. Headers will end up costing you alot of money.

Just do a full tune up, maybe a compression test, run a oil pressure gauge and drive the fucker.

    Have fun !!!

Just remember... with better performance comes poorer fuel economy (in theory)

you swap in a bigger cam, dual plane intake, headers and bigger carb it's going to faster but get worse fuel mileage. Plus, the added power will make your right foot heavier since its going to be more fun to drive.

Swapping in a 460 will yield the same result...

I'm doing some shopping currently and all of the rebuilds I come across have "3000 miles since rebuild".

not a dig at you or the car, just noticed that it seems to be the magic number in the ads, as common as 'ran when parked'.

that's a good find for the money, hope you have fun with it.
