I'm working on the front suspension and brakes on my 53 dodge. I have new bearings for front also. I've got things torn apart and am cleaning stuff up before re-***embly. Is it ok to put the brake drums in the parts washer tank to soak and clean up before putting in the new bearings? I'd just have to clean the drum up real good with brake cleaner before re-***embly right?
    Thanks,
    Scott

  2. That's exactly what I do if I get a drums soaked with brake fluid or gear oil. Just use brake cleaner and rinse them off really well. Even some soapy water afterwards.

No problem, just dry completely and clean the braking surface with alcohol or, like you mentioned, brake clean, before use. :)

wipe as much of the grease out that you can ,so you don't **** up the clean solvent.

Will do, but after removing 57 years of "rust proofing" (grease covered in dirt covered in grease covered in dirt) from some other front end components I'm thinking that I'm gonna cry uncle on the solvent that's in there after this job! HA It's gonna be pretty bad by the time it's all said and done. BTW, I s****ed off as much as I could from the parts before putting them in the tank.

One of the first things I was taught in the first month of auto mechanics cl*** is that you never wash a bearing in solvent that you intend to use again. And no air/blow gun. That has stuck with me for the past 46 years.

Cleaning the drum in the solvent tank is ok but make sure that you wash it off with soap an water after you have it in the solvent tank.

Lately I have been scrubbing drums and other greasy stuff in or with Oil Eater and rinsing them off with the hose or pressure washer.

Bearings I wipe off with a cloth and repack by hand. I can't remember the last time I lost a bearing that I packed myself that was in good shape when I packed it.
