I'm building a '60 Rambler American for my wife............the wheels are 5 on 4 1/2, so Ford or Mopar wheels will match up, but is there a measurement I can find that will tell me if the Rambler "R" logo dog dish hubcaps will fit the other wheels, other than hand measuring each one? Thanks in advance for any help!
I've got dozens of old wheel catalogs from Budd, K-H, Motor Wheel, and Firestone/Accuride. Only one of those catalogs gives data like you're wanting, a 1953 K-H catalog. So, it won't tell us squat about your '60 Rambler, but I can probably get you matched to an older wheel if you can give me your hub cap measurement. Here's an example of how the catalog shows the info. I'll assume you'll need a wheel with the outside of center nubs. If you need clips or inside of center nubs, please describe. Stu
How wide are they? What is the back-spacing...do you remember? I'm trying to decide what to use on the rear to get more tire without cutting anything.
You could take the centers out of the Rambler wheels and weld them into another set of outer hoops, make the width and offset that you need.
I found some....just for informational value, they're the stock wheels off of my '56 Plymouth. The hub caps fit perfectly.
Usually... On 60's vintage steel wheels, small Rambler caps fit on Ford wheels, but the Ford hub centers are smaller than Rambler. Mopar wheels will fit the Rambler but small caps from Rambler don't fit wheels. Look at newer AMC stuff if you can find it. This is my expierence as a used car dealer in the 70's. Did what we had to to put good tires on cheap cars.
Actually, as I posted earlier, the Plymouth wheels (1956) are just what the doctor ordered. The hub caps fit perfectly. I don't know if they're different from newer Mopar wheels, but hope I can find a 7" wheel with the same center.
