So I just installed a used Edelbrock (1406) carb on my 327 sbc. The thing looks brand new, got it from a guy here on the HAMB. It has an automatice choke, which is really why I bought it.

Turn the starter over and the thing starts right up. Voila!!! Let it run for a couple of minutes, mess with the idle but not the mixture screws. Turn the engine off and smoke starts coming out of the carb. Not a lot, but not a little either if you know what I mean.

What would cause this? I haven't messed with the other carb adjustments yet...

Your needle and seat may be leaking gas after you turn your engine off.

    A;
Because it wants to look tough, and be part of the wrong crowd,... Just remember, it won't be able to smoke in public or inside a building,... I suggest you have a talk with it,... and explain what that kind of activity will lead to. I hope this helps,.... :D

Gas is leaking out of the carb and into the intake. Find the source of the leak, most likely it is a bad needle and seat.

Did it start by chewing gum? Will it be doing hard drugs and having unprotected *** next?

Check the fuel pressure. Ebrocks don't like more than 5psi.

  8. BE CAREFUL, those fumes are toxic and could lead to an addiction to Hot rodding or racing....or a professional job working on cars..... Warning..Warning.

Your fuel is leaking, its not smoke, it fuel vapors caused by: too high fuel level, or the needle and seats (one or both are leaking) or leaking float, or too high fuel pressure.

X2, this is the most common problem with the Edelbrock Performers and Carter AFB's put a fuel pressure regulator on it and set it at 4 1/2 psi and you should be good, you will probably find 100's of posts like yours on the web and the solution will be the same.

I don't think that's it. The fuel pressure is 5-6 psi...

it is fuel leaking in, try to shine a flashlight down the carp when you first shut it off.

Yes,... sadly, If it dosen't change its ways,..... it's unfortunately inevitable, I remember seeing the movie in junior high school,..... it's not pretty,... next thing you know,.. it will be hanging out in pool halls and consorting with loose women,... this should be nipped in the bud ! :D:D:D

Maybe a phenolic spacer would help, too.

If you are sure the fuel pressure is as recommended then the next step is to check the float level and float drop settings these settings can be knocked out of wack from being jostled in shipping, you can download the Edelbrock tuning and troubleshooting guide off the Edelbrock website.

I have the same issue and I have read other similar thread and they all seem to point to getting a new phenolic spacer because your carb is probably boiling due to heat soak. I think it makes sense. I just haven't been to a parts store to get one yet though.

x2 on the float level. Thats always been my experiences on this issue, when the carb smokes on my race motors the float level needs adjusting. This is a holley carb in my situation tho.

I already have a spacer to get the edelbrock carb on the stock intake. Isn't that pretty much the same thing? Plus it wasn't even running that long so I wouldn't think it was near the boiling point...

Ok, lets start over here. Start the engine, warm to temp and set timing 1st. Then set idle rpms. By doing it opposite (set idle 1st) you are raising the ****erflys up out of idle circuits, causing the fuel to bleed past!

Let's see, why does my carb smoke?
Fuel pressure too high, set it at 5 like they said.
Floats leak set them at 7/16 with a drill bit.
    Put a spacer in it.
Here's another, choke not adjusted correctly, so it ran rich while being choked, I didn't warm the engine up long enough to burn the rich fuel load out of it and shut it down with the choke still engaged, let a wispy wiff of rich evaporating fuel out of it. ( Yeah wispy wiff, I know, say that 3 times fast fella.)

If you can't see the humour in the thread ***le then there's no hope for you really. No one's disrespecting the original poster, just having a little fun. Fun, you remember that don't you?

As to the t***** problem in question, if it's just cigarettes I wouldn't worry too much, but if it's crack cocaine you'll never get it to stop and it will rob you blind to pay for its habit. Have you thought of rehab?

I agree that 5# is too much, seen AFB's that had to be below 4# to work right. 3 1/2 seems to be enough.
