I have a 1940 Ford Flathead engine with a water pump going bad. At least I think it is the culprit of the noise because it has some give when I try to shake it. I believe it is causing some overheating, too. How do I know if I can rebuild it or if I have to buy a new pump?

Unless you have ever built a water pump before I would just get a rebuilt one and be done with it . That way if something goes wrong you have a warranty . If you rebuild one and it leaks or doesn't work correct , you just waisted your time and money !
    Just my opinion .

Send it to SKIPS IN Punta Gorda Fl. He did mine cost is 200.00 with a 3 day turn around and no more trouble plus they will circulate more water.

Buy a new one. Has sealed bearings rather than bushings.

We stock them brand new....sealed bearings and modern seals. No core charge. And....they work! We also stock the rebuild kits, but it can be a real h***le trying to get the pulleys pressed off w/o damage.

Keep in mind, unless your impeller wasnt turning, or was erroded to nothing, the overheat issue is probably NOT the water pump. A clean block and clean radiator will always keep things right on the temp gauge. If your timing is too far advanced it can also run hot. You should run thermostats (for many reasons)........ SP1KE has the right answer. Send it to Skip Haney in Florida for a rebuild. After the rebuild you will have twice as much flow, new bearings and impeller design and you won't have to worry about it not fitting because you get your original one back. Cost is about $100 per pump and well worth it.
