trying to identify a set of steelies

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alden, Apr 5, 2011.

  1. I snagged a set of wheels for my truck at a show this weekend, the seller said they were off his 61 but I think he meant he had them on his 61 vs them being original to that truck. I'd like to find some police caps or baby moons for them but don't know enough about the wheels to know what to get. They are wider than the wheels that are currently on the truck that I was told were stock (these are about 8") but they look a lot more like the late 50's wheels vs the 1960's.

Find some scrap Chevy wheels with good clips, transfer to your wheels. Any 1/2 ton hubcap up to the early '60s will fit, "trailer house" baldies fit. Lack of safety rim dates them as mid-'60s aftermarket, probably intended for use with camper equipped trucks. Inside the rim flange you'll probably find the maker's stamp.

  3. couple questions, feel free to really dumb it down for me, what are safety rims? And by inside the rim flange do you mean on the backside of the wheel or would I have to take off a tire to see the maker's stamp?

safety rims have an extra rib around them that holds the tire bead on if the tire goes flat.

I had a pair like that a long time ago, I thought they were aftermarket replacements, as mentioned.

I wouldn't worry too much about who made them.

  5. here's another shot (from testing when I first got them). I googled safety rims to see if I could see what you meant by the extra rib - based on what I found don't these have the extra rib?

The rib next to the "bead seats" on this drawing. Your wheels do not have them.

Looks like the safety is there to me; hard to see in bead area but looking where hucap goes on the inside of bead it shows..

  8. I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing that :D
