If the paint is realy old and rust is pokeing thru in very small pits, rub it down good with wintergreen oil (available at the drug store) and it will desolve the rust and give it a little shine in the process.

Yep... I also wet sand with 1500 to 2000. Be careful of factory metallics single stage, It will look like corinthian leather. It might sound a little tedious, but I like to treat it almost like a paint job. I like to isolate the panel I am working on. It cuts down on spatter clean up,and in the end is a wash as far as time. I do this with a light mil visqueen, and mask... for example the roof. When I am done with the roof I cover it and move on. I also like to take off as many emblems and chrome that is possible. I know this sounds like if I am going through this much trouble why not paint the car? I usually only go through these steps if the paint is original... I don't have the before pic,but this car was a classic example of dead original paint.

If you wetsand it, be real careful on the ridges. I have seen too many people over-do it and sand right through the paint.

Tough road, Wetsand with 2000 grit with a thin foam backing pad, stay away from all edges and chrome. Polish with a 3M polish material like finesse it II using a flat yellow wool pad. Back that up with a black foam pad and 3M foam pad glaze. Follow that up with a 3M hand glaze and use a polymer carnuba mix to maintain desired finish.

Easy road and what I would do. wash car with a very mild Vinegar and water solution, Then get some Johnson and Johnson furniture wax in the round metal can, Apply with a terry cloth towell, You can try an Orbital buffer but it may leave an uneven finish, If so just apply more by hand and it will remove the uneven marks. It should look oily, but it will dry out as the solvents flash. be sure and keep the towell moving and work small areas. Keep the desired finish maintained with Pledge and a terry towell and once in a whille Johnson wax again and you should be rolling smooth. 2c.
