Gary Birns and a friend where in visiting the Atlantic Blvd. Barris Shop in the late 1950's. They took 24 snapshots around the shop. The cars that where worked on at the time, and parked in front of the shop. Gary scanned the 8 photos he could find now, but is still looking for the others. Hopefully he will find them soon.

Some really nice behind the scenes photo shows some well known cars as the Kopper Kart, Lyle Lake's Blue Danube Buick, Bob Crespo's 1940 Ford in primer, Dean Jeffries Porsche and Jim Seaton's 1959 Chevy El Camino... And several other unidentified customs.

Thank you Gary Birns for sharing....

Great shots. I love to see photos of some well known cars in various stages. What was the interior out of in the first pic? I wonder if that is the Stude or the Ford's interior.

So cool! Thanks. It's trendy these days to take a swipe at Barris. *****en to see a moment in time when customizing was the trend.

Thank you for sharing those Rik. It's cool to see "everyday" work photos from the old shops. It's actually a bit encouraging to me to see the conditions they worked in and the tools they had on hand and compare that to what we have available to us today as home builders. If they could do it, maybe I can pull it off, too. ;)

Thanks, Rik. Those are the best Barris shop snapshots I've seen. A few even look professional in the way they are composed.

Thanx bro, enjoyed the trip back. One of the things I was amazed with was how much work was done outside in California. Lifts and machinery set up permenantley amazed a 17 year old midwest kid. I see the upholstry outside at the shop in one of these pix, cool. ~sololobo~

  22. Hard to believe so many nice cars came out of such an old dumpy body shop. Thanks Rikster. Neat pics.

On the first photo is that Sam's autograph? I've often though he was the real craftsman of the two brothers.

Although Gary did not take this photo at the Barris Shop, but rather at a late 1950's Cleveland Ohio show I think it is still appropriate to show here, since the car was built by Barris and Bill DeCarr at this very shop.

This is kind of unique photo since there are not to many photos around showing the engine of the Aztec in the late 1950's early 1960's....
