Looking for advice on a good rear end to put in the chevy 1955 2nd pick-up truck, I have two bad ones both very noisy. Can these be rebuilt with better gears on a budget, or what is a good 6-lug replacement.Flange to Flange is 62". running a 383ci sbc with a T350 trans

what is meant by better gears?
they offered few ratios in those trucks
    4:10 and 5:12 i believe.
good for pulling stumps, not much on mileage or speed.
check out http://www.chevytrucks.org/tech/ifs&rearend.htm scroll way down to find rearend swap info.
my 58 has a 89 trans am rearend, but it's also 5 lug

60s trucks had the same width rearend, 3.73 was the most common ratio, compared to the original mid- late 50s rear that usually was 3.90

70s trucks were 5 lug except the 4x4s were 6 lug, but the rear is a bit wider. It'll fit, you just have to worry about clearing the fenders if you have wide wheels/tires.

I had my 55 truck done with a 3:38 gear that was available.

Better gears meaning more highway freindly and not so worn out and noisey. the noise is mostly when turning right slowly and when i am on the gas. i would like to rebuild the original if parts are available and not to expensive.

You might be able to find a good used rear, but most of them are worn quite a bit. Got lucky with my son's 59 truck, the rear is in great shape inside. THere is not much demand for the original rears from these trucks, I s****ped about 5 of them last summer.

I used a 95 9c1 caprice for mine. 5 lugs though (5x5 I believe). 3.42 gears, limited slip diff, disc brakes. Width was perfect for a stock bed and framerail width.

Buddy using a camaro open diff with 3.08 in his.

Too much...look for early 60's GMC's, you'll have to relocate the perches, but GMC's had many ratios available, last I used was a 3.54 posi D44 from a 64 or 65 GMC, cost about 200 in bearings and shims and clutch plates to go thru it, I did the setup my self, so saved some $$ there.

I forgot about the GMCs, which is strange since I have one in one of my pickups. They used the 40 in the 1950s, which has different gears than the 44. They used the 44 and 60 in the 1960s, in half tons. I have a 3.54 posi D60 in one of my 59 trucks. I have a D40 that came in another of my 59 chevys, it's a 3.91 ratio posi.

GMC used leaf springs in the 60s, while Chevy had coil springs. Mostly.

Yes, in fact I pulled a 3.08 out of a 55-59 (had no front sheetmetal on it) for my '57 when we put the BB in it...didn't last too long though;)
