    I know this might sound like a dumb **** question, but what type of hose clamps were around in the 50's? Reason I ask is that I will be replacing my radiator hoses while the engine is out so I thought I may as well do a few small jobs as well. It has the screw up wire clamp type on it at the moment.

    Louie,you might have to look at Riksters site.Or maybe email him.What you can do is,look for stock restored 50's cars.That will give you an idea.

    Hope this helps.

    I think that hose clamps are often over looked. I used clamps from Dennis Carpenters that are OEM from 50's Fords.

    Makes all the difference in the world, if you ask me.

    Just thought I would throw in a pic for you;

    The worm drive hose clamp was invented in 1921. Probably went through a variety of design changes over the years.But I bet by 1946 is looked pretty mch like the common ones bought anywhere today.

    Not to me. You can go to any restoration parts supplier for hose clamps used on their makes. Chevy, Ford. I always pick up catalogs from the restoration houses for the year that I have in mind. etc.

    My favorite for fuel lines are the hotrod thumb screw clamps from the early 50s. I took this picture just for the hose clamps. I found some NOS EELCO thumb screws a few years ago.

    You can get them from Restoration Supply Company. They don't have a web site but call them and get their catalog. They have a lot of detail stuff. I like the wire kind with a pinch bolt for the radiator hoses. Details matter...to me anyway.

    I really like the knurled hose clamps that have a finger mechanism similar to this one although the older ones are of better quality and look cooler. The ones that I have a few of were made in the 40's I believe for Aviation.

    I was saving them for my '32 but I do believe my '35 might get them now.

    I don't know if these were ever used on hot rods back then, but I really like them.

    I don't know what he is trying to say, maybe he's hung up on the header wrap. Either way that is a slick looking intake and alot of nice detail on the plumbing man.

  16. Frank,

    95%+ of his posts are:

    A) Derogatory comments about someone else's opinion;

    B) Making a comment about someone else's "supposed" lack of knowledge

    (I can easily name several posts where this guy has mouthed off about someone being wrong, stupid, or crazy, when in fact the other persons were correct. When challenged, he simply doesn't answer....he prefers to hit-and-run.)

    C) Incoherent;

    or a combination of the three.

    I've never said anything like this before on the H.A.M.B.

    I've been a member for four years and lurked for three years before that; and I try to stay out of the drama and confine myself, for the most part, to useful, factual posts. Other members would be the judge as to whether I've succeeded in doing so.

    I'm certainly not the H.A.M.B. police. I can think of several controversial members here that do offer good information, along with their opinions.
    However, I've yet to see any worthwhile contribution from this guy. Maybe others have...

    Guys, thanks for all the info. Gives me something to work with. BTW holeshot (FLY...have you been ****ing ACID! HA!...POP.)) I always remove the battery before I work on the car. Couldn't get my head around that reply!!! :confused:

    ******knuckles, I've seen pics of your engine on here before. Sure looks great. It's kind of what I'm heading towards, but with 2 carbs. What carbs are you running?

    Cheers

    Don't worry Holeshot's replys are rarely of any value.

    Thanks Algon.

    Thanks Louie.

    The carbs are Carter Ball and Ball. They were on most mopars from the 30's-50's. Cheap and easy to work with. I love them!

    Yep. I saw more of that type in the '40s & '50s, same type with thumb screw on radiator hoses too.

    That Restoration Supply place can probably get you the standing thumb screw clamps like Tommy's for the fuel lines, but larger ones are hard to find. I was lucky to buy a big box of NOS at a swap meet once (no I won't sell any) that had several big enough for the coolant hoses. Keep your eyes open at the swaps, cause I've ever found a source for new ones.

    the original ones were made by Wittek Corp. they were a government supplier for WWII aircraft and as far back as Lindberg's Spirit of St Loius......good stuff. Most of the early EELCO stuff was gov. surplus, if you closely at it you will see the Wittek stamp and often a date from the war period.....

    There were also wire type clamps at that time. Sorry, no pic, very similar to ones seen today but heavier.

  27. Love this thread- some nice work here.
    Lookig at the photos, it seems like there is alot more to the question than just hose clamps. Br*** (?) lines, gl*** bowl fuel filters, etc.

    I guess the best thing is to hit a concours resto show to get an idea about what would have been commonly available. My period is late 50's/ early 60's.

    A few guys were talking about thumbscrew style sold by Eelco... For as much as it seems to be a bad word around here there is a guy with these still in the blister packs, tuscola2000 on Ebay and rather cheap in my opinion. I'm so tired of fighting junk clamps that break or strip just they are tight enough to seal, I bought box of these for general purpose. The quality is far better than any modern or reproduction clamp I've used in years and most of them are even stainless.

    I know this thread is old but it is exactly what I am after.

    I have spent hours looking on the internet for old style hose clamps (eelco, Wittek etc), but havent found anything usefull. Well, judging by some threads, you guys seem to have loads of them. Always going to be the way I guess :rolleyes: :D.

    I checked restorationstuff and they look nice (even though a drawing) but a $4.50 each, I dont think I like them that much.

    I found tuscola2000 on ebay, but he must have sold out.

    Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?

    Many thanks
