Hot Rods Big and little tire sizes for a prewar coupe PICS??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tugmaster, Apr 7, 2011.

  1. I'm doing the 38 Chevy coupe in a 50's hotrod look. Everyone seems to do these cars as g***ers or taildraggers. I want to run big and littles and am wondering what other guys are running. I plan on doing alot of driving so I am opting for radials instead of Bias ply. I was thinking 235's in the rear and 165's up front. I wanted to get some inputs before I pull the trigger and order tires. I know alot of the Ford guys do their cars this style so please share your inputs and pics if you got them. Thanks as always, Todd

  2. I don't know the tire sizes but Ryan's '38 (Ford) sits really nice. I think there are pics in his album?

I'm running P185/70 R14 in the front and P225/70 R15 in the rear on my '40 pickup. Nice stance and looks good in the wheel well.

here is my 33 with 255-70/15's rear and 205-65/15's frt,I took my car to my local friendly tire store and asked them to find and install the biggest tires that would clear my fenders under any condition and these are what they came up with, never had them rub yet even with it full of fat chicks

  5. That is the EXACT look/style I am looking to get. I believe Ryan is running cheater slicks in the rear, the stance and tire proportions are perfect. Todd

  6. The 165s might be a tad small for the front on a fendered car. Try em first. Maybe 185 or 195 front and 235 rear?

But I like extremes, big bigs and lil littles. I would do 165s and Hurst cheaters like Ryan for the rear using 235 cases which mine were ont eh 54.

  7. Good point. I still want the tire to fill the fender opening. Thanks, Todd

Iam running 195/65/15 in the front and 225/75/15 in the rear on my 40 ford coupe. I tried 235/75/15 like some others i had seen, but on my coupe they rubbed inside and out.

My '40 Ford coupe runs 165R-15 up front, and P265/75R15 out back. The wheelwells have been tweaked a little to get tires this big in, but the look is pretty good.

185/65/15 with 2" drop spindles on the front, 255/70/15 and two inch blocks on the rear of the '40. Manual rack---rides good, steers good but is a bear to park. Doesn't rub. Didn't have the 255's on it in the avatar pic.
