After some cleaning and research it looks like a have 1958 235 stick motor in my 1953 Chevy 210.

    Engine Code: CON3 G178
    Head Code: 3836848 GM18

Tommorow I look to see what transmission I have.

Interesting, so is this a good thing or bad thing?

I got a 58 235 in my 54 210. took out the 54 to put it in so it is a good thing for me. Mechanically and durability, I guess the same . But the engine block has a few differences. The motor mounts are in a diffeent location and the water pump is different. Than the 53/54 blocks.

Same head--that's supposed to be the good one.

A 58 will have full pressure oiling, which makes it good. The original 53 motor would not have been full pressure oiling.

Good to know, I need to check and see if the previous owner, made new motor mounts...I mean he must have if the engines in the car.

It looks like the 58's have a little bit better HP.

Hmmm...glad I looked up these codes before I bought headers, intake, etc, does that stuff change?

I mean all I was gonna do was put some Fenton headers and 2x1 intake, what kind of carbs should I use?

Didn't the 53 motors that had automatics from the factory have full pressure oiling? Or did that start in 54?

lol..your right. Well I decided to just work with what I had, maybe clean it up, paint it and such. Just cuz I had already spent so much on front and rear suspension/rebuild parts..$$$$...I will have to take back my oil pan gasket though..haha..

get the engine number that's stamped on the block, at the base of the distributor. That'll get it narrowed down even more.

    It is: CON3 G178: 235, July 17th 1958.

I mean, the motor runs great, sounds like it may have a slight lifter issue, I can hear clicking. I am having the starter rebuilt right now...(I think the solenoid was going out.)

i'm gonna check the 3 speed ****** and rear axle tommorow and see what year that is.

However one things for sure the VIN/Body number checked out it is a 1953 Chevy Deluxe 120..lol :)

    Pretty neat stuff.

There should be a number sequence stamped on the block, on a pad next to the bottom of the distributor. It has more info about what kind of vehicle the engine is from, what transmission it came with, etc. If you're interested.

you're looking in the wrong place. Look here. The number is STAMPED on a machined surface. it is NOT a casting number.

I looked in the area of the oil dip stick pretty thoroughly, nothing is there. Could it be anywhere else?

In this picture you can't see the numbers...they're hiding under the grease/rust/paint on the machined surface that the distributor is sticking out of. S****e it clean, you should see the numbers.

Jim, have you seen anyone ever machine these nubmers off for any reason? Seems to me a few years ago I had a plain Jane 235 with that pad machined for some reason- maybe it was a stealth, high perf, double throw down, tope secret, whiz bang 235 for the CIA,
