I'm running straight pipes & rams horn manifolds on a 406 sbc with a mild cam. It's not lowd until I jump on it but it doesn't talk/ rap as much as I'd like. It had some stainless steel packs that had no sound at all I swapped them for cherry bombs but I think they were too far back. A previous car I had had a stock 305 with 2 inch duals that had Cherry Bombs mounted right up front and that ****er sounded like the end of the world when you jumped on it and would tell you a story of raps and pops and burbles on deceleration. I'll be doin' a similar setup on the Chevy.

I'm running smittys on my f100 with 292 Y. They cut out before the rear wheels and have a mellow tone that's nice. I do want it louder and think I will go with cherries or straight pipes.

Pour some gas and oil down some new cherrybombs and it's 1963 allover

  7. Part of the "Y block sound" is the effect of the back cylinders fireing right into the pipe with stock manifolds, IMO. I' ve got Ram Horn's on my F600 with short pipes & Brand X mufflers, sounds like any other V8

OK, I have a choice that is NOT listed in your survey! BROCKMAN MELLOWTONE MUFFLERS from Hagerstown Indiana. I have run Y-Blocks for years. Maybe you will remember my 1954 Black Gl***Top Custom back in the 90's. Brock and Elaine build both SteelPack and Gl***Pack mufflers and I like'm both. You want LOUD? Use their SteelPacks. You want nice and mellow? Use their SteelPacks.
If I had to choose from your survey, I would have to choose SMITHY's.

P.S. Straight Pipes are NEVER a good way to go. Flatheads or Y-Blocks just don't sound right with "Straights".

Sorry... I caught this too... I clicked into this thread to get all upset and excited over someone who loaded up a bunch of Y-blocks and was cracking some half ***ed joke about it!

    Geez.... Load versus loud.

Either way, the info you needed should be here. A load of it too.

I ran megaphones on a 56 Y-block and man it sounded sweeeeet! I vote for straight pipes.
