I have a buyer for my '41 Ford Business Coupe. Almost. The car is painted flat black, Hot Rod Flatz, but the buyer wants some shine to it, and is concerned about the cost of a clear coat. This is a no chrome street rod, the only taping would be the glass & grille. What do you think the cost would be to have it done in the South Carolina area ?

    Thanks,
    Bob

  2. You would be surprised at how much shine you can get out of flatz or satin paint with a buffer. I had mine in satin black and did'nt care for it so I tried buffing the fenders and they shined up really good. Might want to give it a try.

ballpark $1500 for quality work.. Up or down from there I suppose.. we are doing a 65 mustang right now that is basically just a spray job, 2 grand with materials for that.

Not in the biz but I would guess at least a grand for materials and time. A good quality clear alone could cost 500 bucks. If it has had any silicone on it you are asking for trouble.

Another thing to consider is gloss black is the worst colors to hide surface imperfections. If he doesn't like the semigloss, he may like any bodywork issues even less.

I agree with Oldschool 66. Try buffing it, but go slow and keep it wet.

    Just my .02

You want to spray clear over Hot Rod Flatz? I'm no painter, but that sounds like a disasster waiting to happen. Can't imagine how that would look like a regular gloss black paint job.
