***us: I think your closer to the truth with your posts than you know!!!

Paperdog: Exactly where everyone's thought were!
Possibly putting it in the location of the old "Williams Dinner"

Bill Casey (MSRA #12) and I have been working with the Preservation Alliance on this representing the MSRA. We were the ones who made the nomination for Porky's to be on the Top 10 endangered places in Minnesota. Unfortunately, the Preservation Alliance needed to try to keep the fact it made the top 10 quiet until the official announcement was made in May. Due to the Truelsons sudden sale of Porky's, the cat had to be let out of the bag early about it making the list of 10 most endangered places, so that we could do what we could to save what we could. They are planning to keep it on the list, as a reminder to people who want places saved, that they have to be vigilant and vocal about saving it. Saying a place should be saved, and actually doing it can be VERY costly and time consuming!! Having time to make plans for those situations is nice. Unfortunately, in the case of Porky's, how quickly the plans needed to be formulated caught everyone by surprise.

I would have like to included more info about what was happening when this 1st came up, but was asked to keep it between the few of us who knew.

I did get an email from Bill just this morning saying the the building MAY be sold to another party and MAY be getting moved to a location in the south metro!!! Whether that means the signs too, and if it will be open for dining, we'll have to see. But if it ends up in this spot, it will be somewhat public, so people can still see it.

    I'll keep everyone posted ......

America's problem is that it invariably bulldozes significant old buildings to put anonymous corporate boxes in their place and then whines and feels insecure about lack of history. Other places in the world have history because they don't knock everything down every thirty years.

There should be hope however as the Broiler was resurrected in Downey, CA....

Gonna miss sitting in the lot watching everything cone through this Summer. As they say, in the middle of difficulty comes opportunity- so now is a chance to get the word out for a new cruise spot. While, frankly, NOTHING is going to be able to fully replace Porky's, does anyone have an idea about some new place to gather? I read an article mentioning a drive in that's been in business since '51 and still open on Maryland in east Saint Paul...what about there?

Thanks to the MSRA for working together with the Minnesota Preservation Alliance to do whatever can be done. From what we've heard Porky's closing came down to several different reasons that made it virtually impossible that it would stay open.

Seems to me that Porky's just doesnt cut it for Tryg. Seems like the place wouldbe on the lower end of the scale for him, considering what i saw on his own resturaunt's website. He probably "couldnt waste his time" with such a "low level" eatery. I hope it can be saved and reopened for many more generations to enjoy

Tryg's sits on the site of the West Lake Porky's, a block from where I grew up. That was part of my youth. There was a Putt-Putt there, and one of the early homes of Cl***ic Motorbooks was next door. Used to climb up the outside of the grain elevator behind it and fly paper planes off the top.....

If the city doesnt screw up the permits, you will probably get to enjoy it when you are down in Hastings. If that happens it would be in an approprite place to enjoy it and other related scenery.

I think you're talking about the "Dari-ette" on Minnehaha.

They didn't waste any time - I drove by there on Sunday and the building was gone already. They picked it up and moved to some intermediate location on Saturday night, I think, and will haul it the rest of the way to Hastings when the spring road restrictions are lifted.
