I submerged and soaked the engine in Kroil and ATF for a week. I still had to beat it apart with a 6 pound hand sledge. The lifter were especially tough to get out. I had to use a 3/4" steel drift with the sledge. Be careful not to damage the lifter bores. The pistons broke into pieces but did come out ... Good luck ...
I tried the atf, PB Blaster, WD40 methods for a month or so with a '46 Merc motor on a stand and tilted to get full coverage around the piston. In the end it took a 10lb sledge against a block of wood to free the pistons.
