I need the help of experts.... I have an 84 CJ that I installed a 5.7L TBI into.... My problem....the water pump pully is way tooooo close to the electric fan....as I speed up on the fwy, there is enough wind force that it starts to push the fan motor into the water pump....right now my magic # seems to be around 60 MPH depending on wind speed and direction.... The short shaft pumps I looked at hit the timing chain cover...and then there is this little issue of reverse flow....I have the stock serpentine belt setup.... Someone said that an 86 and up Corvett pump is short shaft and reverse flow....is this correct? Or, am I better off going with a different fan?
Here's a list showing Corvette ('84-'91) pumps from Edelbrock.... shows short with serp belt (2 versions) Be SURE the shaft diameter fits your pulley. Corvette uses 3/4" shaft (8815), 'most' other Chevrolets and aftermarket are 5/8" (8882). http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/water_pumps/high_perf.shtml The only short pump problem I've seen is that the pump hits ONE bolt (upper p*** side) on the engines with 'plastic' front cover. You can replace that one bolt with ****on head and problem solved.
usually it's kinda difficult to run the belt setup for a long pump, with a short pump. How hard would it be to just put a mechanical fan on it? you can get them in reverse rotation.
