Hello guys, I'm Andy. At 52, I'm not quite old enough to remember the hay day of hot rodding but I dearly love the old tin, especially 34 Fords and 50 Mercs although I must confess the last time I worked on a full sized car I could see my belt buckle standing up and that's a while! I'm an electronics engineer and don't have much spare time for hobbies but in recent years I've taken up RC cars and now build cars especially for speed records. May interest you to know that the current RC speed record is 163 mph! I love the whole speed record thing and some time soon will finally make the trip to Bonneville but, in the mean time, I've decided to build a fully working RC belly tank lakester. It may not manage 160 but it'll be the coolest model at the Speed Championships and I've always loved the old belly tanks. Which brings me to the reason I'm posting on HAMB. I've got a whole load of pics of bellies and have a good idea what I'll be building but I need detail info, specifically dimensions and suspension tips. The car will have an electric motor a live rear axle and beam front end. I'll try to be as faithful to the original mechanics as I can. I'd like to hear from any HAMB members who are willing to point me in the right direction. I'd like to post a build thread but if you guys thinks it's not the kinda thing for HAMB, let me know. I'll understand. Great to see that true rodding is still alive and well. All the best from England. Cheers! Andy
Thanks for the welcome Crow, Captain Scarlet and Scot. I work for a company based in Chandler so I know AZ pretty well. Had never heard of Mammoth so I had to have a looksee online. Love the pics of "God's filling station". I live around 20 miles outside London in a community with around the same size population. It's called Colney Heath. Any ideas who might be able to help me with my project or advice? Cheerz! Rootz
Thanks Keith, I'm trying to search for whatever I can think of but this forum and the sub-forums are just SO active! Cheerz! Rootz
Rootz see if any of these help.................. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=558248&highlight=belly+tank+build http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=513789&highlight=belly+tank+build http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=555655&highlight=belly+tank+build http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=431263&highlight=belly+tank+build Keith
Thanks for that Keith. Those builds make really interesting reading. After that helping of automotive **** I'm feeling kinda light-headed! The kind of things I need to know are such things as the ideal locations of the suspension arm mounting points, if such things can be ideal. I ***ume, for instance, that if the inside mount is too close to the front, the whole car will tend to porpoise. If they're too far apart - the front mount of the rear suspension arm is too close to the axle - then... what?? Is it best to mount that mount in the same plane as the front drive shaft union? That kinda thing. Any ideas? Cheers! Andy
Another question in my mind: Does the front leaf spring centre line need to be in line with the caster angle? I'm aiming for 30 degrees to keep it straight come what may but mounting a leaf spring canted back at that angle will tax my ingenuity. Cheers, Andy
