Hey fellas, anyone know of a shop in the Calgary area that shaves bias plys? I have a set of Coker G78-15's on my '50 Chev and am wondering if one or more might need some touching up as I have a small shake. Thanks for your help. James
Come on help these guys out. We found a few places in California that still do it. I'm sure there are someplace within a days drive of these guys.
Any update on this thread? I am also looking for someone that can shave tires in the Calgary/Edmonton area. Thanks.
Look for an old tire shop that did a lot of recap sales or work years ago. They may still have a tire truing machine in the back room. It was pretty common to true recaps and other bias tires back in the 60's and 70's.
I have the same issue here as well, so I asked a fellow I know in the tire retail business and he suggested I try a place here that does recaps as they should be able to help me out.. He also suggest seeking out the oldest fellow in the shop for help. Maybe you could ask around your area for a similar business. Meanwhile, if I have success I will post. Wish me luck! -Dave
I do it to new tires only. Road debris in used tires is very bad for the cutting blade. Sorry 'bout that.
Can I ask what business you have John? Perhaps I can locate someone closer to home.. (I will hand pick the debris out of the tread if need be ) Thanks, -Dave
Harper's Tire here in Calgary does "Road Force Balancing" it is an advanced method of balancing that applies a load roller to the tire and identifies runout / out of round issues, they can rebalance it based on what they find. This might work on the old bias plys, especially if they are only slightly out of round. Anybody have experience with this? Just thought that I would throw it out there. -Jeremy
In Calgary, maybe try the Kal Tire truck center in the Foothills industrial area. I don't know for sure if they do or if they don't, but they might
I'm glad that I wasn't the only one with this problem! I know that I couldn't find anyone in Syracuse that still performed tire shaving. Fortunately the rubber I have came with my car and I believe they're pretty old, so I'm buying new bias plys this summer. BUT....if anyone knows of a place in Syracuse, NY that still does this, I'd love to know who.
Talked to Kal Tire, they don't shave tires and also are lacking in personality. Harper's Tire doesn't shave either but offer the road force balancing for $27 a tire, and also offer on-car balancing for $40 a tire. The search continues...
