How do I ID a Delco Generator - 6V or 12V?

I've got a rather good condition Delco generator sitting on my stairs that I bought several years ago. Problem is, I can't remember if it's 6 volt or 12 volt. I think it's 12, but would rather know for sure. It's got the tag on it, but doesn't give voltage, only a serial number.

Sorry if it's a really beginners question - I've been out of the loop for a while.

What color is the tag? Black tags were 6V. and red tags were 12V.

if you post the part number, someone could probably tell you what it is.

Even if the paint is faded off the tag.

Sometimes rebuilders stamp 12V into the housing to help you out.

Well, that's a little disappointing. It's a black tag. Guess I'll be getting out the old check book.

What's the number? I have a Hollanders and could look it up for you.

A 6 volt generator can generate a lot more than 6 volts. I have taken 6 volt generators to local rebuild shop and unregulated they have put out up to 15 volts. You may be able to use the 6 volt with a 12 volt regulator

On second thought, it can be done, but not a good idea, as I found out by reading this:

I was gonna suggest sticking your tongue on it such as you might with a 9v battery, but checking the tag makes alot more sense...
