I just bought this 36 5-window coupe. The body is freaking unbelievable; not a single spot of rust or any repair work ever done. Probably the best 30's body I have ever seen. The ch***is has a Mustang-II front end, an 8" Ford rear end, and is set up of a small block Ford. I am just starting on this and once I remount the body to square it up I want to change the rumble trunk to a conventional trunk. The rumble set up does not have a lower rain drip gutter, while the trunk set up does. Does anyone know where I can get the lower rain gutter rail? It would be real nice to start the conversion with some original or reproductin drip rail. I have included a picture of another car showing the rain gutter rail thata I need. Thanks, Joe Germann
nice looking project, i wonder if you could find a donor section from a late model car and just cut the sections you need and weld them as needed?
I believe you will have to fabricate that driprail which was originally made from some pretty thick metal and had a drain hole near each corner where a drain hose was fitted. It would be nice if you could find a donor section that would work. The fellow on this forum that is building a 35 3 window just fabricated that section. Good Luck
too lazy to do a search, but a creative Hamber developed tool and method to make drip rails. make a long strip of 18 gauge, perhaps 3/4 to 1" wide, and use a come-along to pull the flat strip through the die, which curls up and makes a lip as it reavels through the well engineered die. It might have been 2 or 3 different pulls through different dies? It was a magnificent thread here, within the last 2 years. was it "make your own drip rails"? -jim -jim
If I could get a donor that would be super, but then again it's probably not all that hard to make for a good fabricator. I could not find the "make your own drip rails" thread but will continue to hunt for a solution. I know there are companies producing trunk drip rails for 32's and a bunch of other years but have yet to find someone making them for a 36. A nicely made replacement piece would be most ideal. Joe
Joe I can make the drip rail part you need. In the future I will be doing the whole drip rail on my hand formed 36 roadster body.
The drip rail thread was mine, here's the link.http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=376591 It is a good way to put complicate rolled edges in. Hope it helps.
Here are a few pictures of the rear trunk gutter lower section under construction. This is a lot tougher then it looks to make & look original. More to come.
I am redoing one of the gutter pieces I was not happy with the way it looked. Joe is this the part you need. If so I do not have any extras, I might be able to make them I will take a good look at them over the weekend I need to focus on the gutters.
I was not happy with the inner part of the gutter the top rolled lip is just shy of 3/16 of an inch & as you turn the first part it wants to straighten the the curve that needs to be in the part & as you roll the flange over the rest of the way it wants to straighten it out even more. Today I will trim & fit the 2 pieces together & start tig tac welding them together. I guess that is why they call it a learning curve.
I had to finish some honey do stuff then got to go to the shop to play. I got the new piece trimmed & the 2 tacked together for the lower gutter section. The piece fits quit well & I am happy with the results of the new piece Keep a watching.
Joe I finished welding & grinding the lower section today fits great on the original 36 roadster body I have here. I will start the side pieces Tuesday I am off on Sundays & Mondays I will post a picture tomorrow.
Here is the lower section all welded & ground fits great. Tuesday I will start on the side filler section's that go from the existing gutters down to the corners.
Dan, It looks real good. When you get a chance, think about those frame-to-body brackets that I need and let me know your thoughts. Regards, Joe
progress on the right side corner & side filler section. Notice the rolled over lip just as in factory looking. It need a little more clean up then on to the left side.
I bent, fit, welded & ground the left side today. All I have to do is make & install the corner drain tubes then it is ready to ship. Joe will have to do some t******* & fitting in his coupe.
Looks killer. One question, does the trunk latch mount onto the gutter? Do you have a picture of how the trunk latch mounts? Thanks, Joe
Joe you will have to remove the trunk latch mount pad up at the top & move it down to the lower gutter. I will send a small patch section to fill in the upper cut area, measure 3 times weld once. It should be ready for PU tomorrow.
Looks real nice Dan. Joe, the coupe looks really solid. Did it have the rumble seat in it still? Going to sell the seat?
Django, The car is solid beyond belief. It's like it just came off the ***embly line. I did not get the rumble seat or any of the rumble pieces, like hinges. I bought a really nice ch***is, body, and I did get the original seat which is going back in. Good luck finding a nice seat. Joe
That piece is missing. I'll have to locate one. Let me know when the pieces are ready and we'll arrange the shipping. Many thanks again and again ... Joe
I just received the trunk pieces and WOW!!! They are incredible. I immediately popped the trunk lid and tried them out. They are as perfect as Henry would have done himself. Thanks you so much Dan. I really appreciate it. I'll send pics along the way from rumble-to-trunk. My best regards, Joe P.S. I'll be asking you about proper fitment when we go to install the pieces.
