Has anyone done this? If so do you have pictures and a list of parts used? I am considering it, but I can't picture it in my head.
I am mostly just curious. I have never seen it done. My car has been apart almost 4 years and I am starting to look at what others have done to theirs.
never seen it done but with the way the hinges extend into the doors i really dont see a way to do it without seriously compromising the structural integrity of the door. however there are a lot of people out there that are prob smarter than me so maybe someone figured it out....
This is usually more of a streetrod type modificaton. and I think slickhale is correct, not really possible due to the way the hinges are, I say love the uniqueness of your old car and keep the metal dash and wing vents, something that new cars don't have. and I think its part of the charm of driving an old car, kinda like 60's hippie bushes!
Hey Domino, on your 62, the vent window and frame unbolt from door and come out very easily. You would have to re-cut a flat piece of gl*** to cover the opening and retain the window track that is attached to the vent frame. You could fabricate a bracket to retain the horizontal track in place in the front part of door. I have seen some replace the bottom of horizontal track that holds gl*** with a longer piece. You may not have a proper seal in old vent window area and would have to install weatherstripping in it's place.
how are you going to roll that longer window down? how are you going to keep it from flopping around like a limp willy when it's up? the vent window frame on a hardtop is an ENORMOUS part of the window regulator structure and also increases the strength of the door itself. unless you're replicating a grand national car and ditch the gl*** altogether...
I think it's in the too hard basket on a pillarless [frameless] door. Done it on a tudor falcon and it works fine......
