1953 Olds Rocket 88 424ci

I have a customer who is looking for a Delco-Remy 6v or 12V starter. I have many Deco-Remy Starters but don't have any idea what fits. I'm hoping that any 1953 starter will work. His motor is almost ***embled, he has no core and I need a starter to break in the motor. Does anyone have any idea what part number I am looking for? Is there a book I can look up the number in?

hey maybe it's 303, not 324. 324's were in 54-56 Olds

BTW: is it for a hydramatic rocket or for stick, think they are different. I would think any starter from a 49-52 Olds with hydramatic would work. Only problem is they are 6V, only 53 was 12v (with course tooth ring gear). I believe in 54 they went with a different tooth count on the ring gear, so the newer starters probably won't work, that is unless you change the starter drive mechanism. It all depends on what flywheel you are using!!

 

Thanks Willy, he wants to go with either a 6v or 12v starter and his current ring gear is 145t.... what would the corresponding starter gear count be? and will any gm starter with the right count work? Bell housing issues??? starter bolt issues?

Starters for rockets from 49-56 should work (if you have dual range hydramatic), but 54-56 are different tooth count. If you could get the matching flywheel (54-56) with the later starter, then you should be good to go. You might not be able to put the earlier drive ***embly into a later starter, as the cases might be a little different.

I will try and get you the particulars tonight.

 

Got lucky.... found a 49-53 6V and it will work perfect.... Now I have to come up with a price...... Left sided 50 year old starter.....????? Can't buy new ones, as we say in the biz... unobtainium... hmmmm

 

Have no idea of a price, but you may find someone who is parting out a 49-53 Olds on EBAY or Craigslist. You might want to try cl***ifieds of cl***icoldsmobile.com. They may have what u r looking for at a reasonable price.
