X3 I had one built with extra clutches anda better converter+external cooler/dual filters and ran it behind a 468 in a 4dr dually for years and would regularly pull 2 6000lbs pulling trucks on a 38ft triaxle lowboy with a large toolbox and 2 500 polaris sportsmans! as far as i know it's still living albeit a softer life

the 4l60 and 4l80e are newer versions of the same basic trans, and they live behind some of the most wicked LS motors around. So yeah, It can handle a stock 454.

edit: the part that gets people is, they don't have a kickdown cable. the TV cable has to be just right. i learned the hard way in high school, before there was a HAMB to teach my wicked little self.

yea my truck had 454 with 4180e worked great! loved it! ask a ****** shop though, the 4180 was a 4x4 trans. i think you might need the 4l60, but i could be wrong?

The 4l80E comes in non 4x4, and its the one to seek out if you want to handle some hard use, its basically a updated th400.

The 700-R4 is weaky weaky in stock form, but can be built to handle more power, the 200-R4 is another that can actually be built to handle more power than a 700, but requires more cash.

    Dunno much about 4l60E's.

I wouldnt stick a 700-R4 behind a 454, but I also wouldn't stick a th350 behind anything at all if I wanted to hot rod, so my opinion may be of very little use to you. I've either blown too many up, and or replaced too many.

Edit: Slushboxes **** anyhow, go manual. (better mpg too)
