    Wheel/tire/stance...

First is stance... It plays an important part in selecting rolling stock. I don't know how the Olds is going to sit, so I'll go both ways...

Forward Rake. I'd do wide whitewalls with '55 Olds hub cabs... and I would paint the little stripes in the caps body color. The wheel behind the caps should be either body color, egg shell, or deap marron. Hell, I'll donate the caps if you go this way...

Reverse Rake. I truly believe this car begs for a nice early custom reverse rake. Nothing dramatic, just simple little lean towards the *** end. It would make the wheel/tire combo so obvious - Sombrero (on your own getting those!) cabs with wide whites. Wheel color behind the caps should be maroon.

Ryan has so designer in him, this is the second post I have read where his suggestions, to me, were dead on.

The first was that green frame with white rear end.

I agree. Ryan knows his stuff.

....and Denise, if the Egorama is a go this year, you need to call me and get hooked up with some speed goodies and a posi to make Mr Olds perform like he looks! I'd love to see you kick *** in that!:D

  6. That sounds good to me for the lip of the wheel that would show with those caps. I was just getting ready to paint the steel wheels.

The olds cap with a forward rake is my choice.

Did Earl colorsand the mid coat? Or is just a really good painter? Any tricks you could bestow on us mere mortals?

  9. Wow, good question.
I was always taught(by the chemists) to never, NEVER, EVER sand the color coat before applying the clear(UNLESS...it's a solid color--and then you should still recoat)---especially with metallic/pearl colors because you cut the color/coating off the metallic flake, exposing it, and the color goes 'dead'(gray). Makes a clean color look...well....bleh, dingy, flat, etc. Sure, you can cut it and lay one last coat before clear and that should eliminate any nibs/trash in the preceding color coats.

Second question.......the answer is no. I am mediocre at best, and extremely lucky the rest of the time.
I can't imagine why you would even think that

Tricks? I know none  Lots of guys here DO though. Better talent here than me.

Big Olds ain't perfect, but he'll never have to feel out of place in a crowd :D

    Maroon? Yep.

I had a '65 Riviera that was very close to the color on this Olds. I believe my mix was GM "Desert Myst" with a splash of purple added... Anyway, I decided to do something fairly different for wheels and tires. I got a set of stock GS Riviera wheels and painted them a deep maroon (almost black) and then slapped on a set of 3" wide whites... Sounds crazy, but it had the coolest early low rider look to it...

I attached two images of the car... They are terrible, but all I could find. Man, I miss that car...

Maroon, yep, I like that idea and we have been discussing which Olds caps would look best. I really like the idea of keeping it all Oldsmobile.

35P/U, I do plan on working on the "speed" issue later this summer, after the chroming, top and interior are paid for. Perhaps in Aug we can discuss a posi and any other suggestions you might have to make him go faster.... and stop quicker. :D

Earl Schieb is much too modest. Everything I've seen so far is flawless. I can't wait to show you guys his work. I'm so excited, only alittle more then two more weeks till Big Olds comes home!!

Thanks everyone for all the kudos and words of encouragment, means alot.

Wow. Looks great. And it won't clash with the bright blue plastic tarp top or yellow rainsuits, either.
I like the bezel peak much better than the 'beak'.

Congrats on getting Big Olds done.

Actually I scanned that from the April 1999 issue of Rodder's Digest. Page 69.

I thought it sorta fit in here.
