1960 Starliner build thread

    Max finished the Right Door patches.

    Then he started the upper right rear fin rust out repair. The first 2 are after he cut out the rotten first half section.

    Tomorrow he will do the same to the other 2 ft section of the fin, more to come.

    Max finished up welding in the patch panel in the front of the right trim area rust thru then ground the welds. The right side is starting to look good a couple of other small things to do.

    Next is the trunk floor it is just a little hole'e.

    Some progress on the trunk floor.
    The galvanized looking center was supplied by Dave the silver looking new hand formed metal on the right & lower left corner was made by Max.

    Personaly I think the '60 Starliner is one of the best looking cars ever produced. Saw one in '60 on the show room floor that was lavender color. Lusted for it ever since.

    max started removing the rust out in the trunk & found another replacement panel needed to be made.

    Some attachments strips were made to Ty in the new panels to the old.

    Max got the other piece for the left side made & the sub pieces welded together & starting to weld into the trunk area.

    Max did a bunch of welding on the right side hand made replacement panel & coated the inside of the rear panel with por 15. Then started fitting & trimming the rusted trunk lid drip rail section into the fin area &down to the tail lite opening.

    The rear panel is taking shape Max had to replace the rusted thru lip area the goes just under the bumper I think a rubber flap attach's to it guessing. we did not do the disassemble Dave did again its all in the details of the metal.

    Max spent the day grinding lots of weld footage & some touch up welding, its starting to look good.

    The rust mights had eaten away on the upper left fin so some work need to be done.

    It's getting there 1 step at a time. A little more welding & grinding then on to the next part.

    More progress on the Starliner the back 30 inches was rusted thru in quite a few places so a new section was fab-ed up.

    Notice the upper recess line is in for the factory trim to fit to.

    It's a tougher then it looks welding in the top section keeping it from warping like a ruffle potato chip & banana combined, but Max got the job done.

    A small patch had to be made for up under the left rear fin.

    Then it was on to final trim & weld in the main left rear quarter patch that Max made.

    Max worked on the very rear of the left quarter where the bumper recess goes back side first.

    The work looks great. I have been following this thread and maybe you have said before but what guage metal are you using?

    Most of the panels we build are 18 gage AK DQ steel. The modern ak is only a few thousands 3 or 4 thicker then the original 19 stamped panels. The rolling mills seam to roll the new steel to the thinest of the guide spec it seams to me that way they get more sq footage out of the billet they start with. Also the 18 gives us a little more grinding room so we don't grind to the OOO to thin category when building replacement panels.

    Thanks I have been doing a little patch work on my 63 floors. This is my first attempt at it and thats what I am using.

    The left front wheel arch was a rusted bad on the underside. So Max made a new section to replace the rot.

    I got the magnets at the local nut & bolt store then added the bolts for handle's or if you want to be trick use cabinet nob's.
