This got posted on a LSR board today: Subject: Salt Report Date: Thu, 7 Apr 2005 04:13:36 +0000 At the USFRA meeting this evening, Hugh Coltharp had been out to Wendover setting up the reservations for World of Speed. He said there's a LOT of water, so much that the water on the salt was up to the roadway on I-80. The area at the bend of the road and on in toward Wendover is under water as well. This is looking like the situation in 1983 when events were cancelled on the salt flats because of high water. We need some warm winds, hot sun and luck. Keep your fingers crossed.
How long does the water usually last for? Will it last there for months or drain/evaporate in a few weeks? When the BIG lakes fill here they tend to take a few years to empty.
Have already bought tickets to fly across for the event........ Let there be heat & wind from now till then......please.... Drewfus
Down south we're hoping Mother Nature shows some mercy. The SCTA El Mirage season is looking like it'll get a late start too. We need warm winds and a ton of sun to dry up the lake. But hell, blame me. We picked this season to race, so of course it's gonna' be a shit stain. Sun, Sun, Sun and Santa Anas... Please.
We got a lot of snow/water this winter, but with a lot of dry years leading up to it. 1983 we had more water and wet years leading up to it. I suspect the flats well dry up pretty quick once we stay warm for a few weeks. And the salt will be nice and smooth. I am not too worried. I may get out there this weekend....got to gamble a little....If I do, I will take some pics.
Man, this is the one thing you just sort of don't think about then you're building a salt car...that the salt can be covered in water Ah well, if the event gets cancelled we'll take the tank out onto a nice. straight, well lit stretch of I-5 at 3:30 in the morning for "testing."
Also from Landracing.com "FYI, Intreped (formerly reiley) Started pumping last thursday 2-24 and will pump thru the end of April. Only two months of pumping but hopefully it they will pump again after the season." Reily will be pumping water (and salt) onto the flats for the rest of April. Too early to worry now.
