In my daily driver my crank gave up the fight. It is a 98 gmc , vortex motor. In my stash of junk I have a low mile motor out of a 84 both motors are 305 ci . The head looks ok on the vortex ,could the good 84 block and the vortex heads be combined to make a decent motor. I can't spend a lot of money on this its not worth too much . I was thinking a vortex cam and lifters could be all I need. Anyone try this before?

Vortec heads will fit an older block, but I would find a better engine to put them on then a 305. 88-95 TBI 350 blocks can be had for cheap.

The current engine in your truck is most likely a roller motor (roller cam and valve train). But, the VORTEC heads will go onto the earlier block just fine. You'll have to use ALL the late model accessories due to the serpentine belt system, unless you have EVERYTHING from the earlier block. You'll need to swap dampeners at the very least. My DD truck has a stroker 305 in it; 305 that's .030 over, cut down 400 crank, rotating ***embly balanced, but I still have the small valve/small port #601 53cc combustion chamber heads. HAS to be high test fuel. Likes the freeway more at 70 MPH than it did with the stock 305. Butch/56sedandelivery.

  4. The heads will work but the 84 block wont take the vortec cam.
