I have a 1949 chevy truck 3100 with a newer 235 I6 3 on tree, motor locked up on me looking to do a 350 v8 swap, 75 nova rear axle, want a 4 or 5 speed stick but dont know what transmission i need. Will the muncie 4-speed transmission work with this set up? i dont want a auto, or should i get the newer 235 rebuilt and swap out the tran and axle, maybe a t5 tran but wouldn't know what axle

It's not so much as "which tranny you need", but which tranny you want. Going with a 350 leaves the options pretty much wide open. Sure a muncie will fit, any of them. M20, 21 or 22. If you use an s10 5 speed, it will have to be out of a 2wd 4.3 v6, the 2.8 v6 engines were only a 60 degree block, so they won't work. Or a camaro trans. Any will work, it just depends how much work you want to contend yourself with to accomodate the install. Newer transmissions will use a hydraulic clutch setup. An older muncie, does not. Also, driveshaft length will be your only other concern. Any competent machine shop can modify your driveshaft easily enough, but if I remember correctly, the m22 has a fixed yoke and a slip joint in the drive shaft. This will require more work, and money on your part. It you are looking for the easy route, an m20 or m21 would be the cheapest and easiest route. However, also the most noisy. Plus, no OD. I would focus on looking for a newer junk donor car, such as an s10 or camaro with a 5 speed. That will supply you with all of those little pieces that usually add up to a lot of time and money.

Thanks for the reply, is it worth fixing up the 235? might be the same money to rebuild as swapping in a 350 v8, and less work.
