Bought a street rod with a 350 crate motor. Unknown year. Want to add an aluminum oil pan but the block and oil pan have provisions for the dipstick on either side. The aluminum pan's seem to go in year ranges and dipstick side. I'll know for sure when I pull the pan but will the flange on the pan cover the unused dipstick boss? Thanks for any help.
I'll know for sure when I pull the pan but WILL THE FLANGE ON THE PAN COVER THE UNUSED DIPSTICK HOLE? Block can use dipstick on either side.
Yes it will cover it....But..dont go with. Chinese aluminum pan. Get a Milodon steel pan and paint it.
you must have the Gm Performance Parts 260 Hp crate motor what side is the dipstick now? use the pan for that
The pan will generally cover the area your questioning. The fix for your problem if I understand correctly is to tap the unused dipstick hole with 1/8-27 NPT and use a 1/8" Pipe plug to close the hole. The plug only needs to be tapped and sunk just under the depth of the pan rail as to not interfere with the gasket and mating surface. No drilling is needed for the correct size, just tap the threads. The pan and gasket should take care of the rest. I believe thats what your asking.
if it's he engine i'm thinking of no pipe plugs are needed to plug any extra holes , it comes with drive in plugs to fill the dipstick hole not being used but the way i read it is his question is what oil pan he should use
I it a one piece rear seal? If so when you decide which side you are going to use for your dipstick make sure you gat a corresponding gasket.
Most of the crate engines I've installed come with plugs in the dipstick hole on both sides of the block. You just knock out the one that matches your oil pan. In your case, it shouldn't be very hard to plug whatever holes you don't need. Larry T
I agree 36, in case the new pan doesn't come with the plugs, I wanted to give him a correct way to fix it. I forget not everyone is like us old machinist kind of guy's and just instinctively machine and modify things and make them better than new, and better than the company's mass producing parts and making big profits.
Target Master 350's come with the dip stick for either side, and a plug for the un-used hole. There is an after market company that makes an aluminum (I believe) "bulge" type of affair that bolts to the block after holes are drilled/tapped to hold it in place, I guess so you can use a dual dipstick pan on a single dipstick block. I'll bet that's a real popular item(?)...........I just went and looked through my files, it's made by RHS and is so you can made your block into a right or left hand oil dipstick tube block, as they come both ways. This was done to confuse the California inspection stations if you has a different block than what came in a car/truck. This was in an article about the stroker 305 to 334 motor. 305 blocks also have "305" cast right on the side of the block so they know at a glance. But back to the OP question, plug the hole and use your pan, you might have to get two sets of gaskets and use some from each. Butch/56sedandelivery.
