Okay, this is my first post. I'm brand new and I can't express Brand New enough. Recently retired and have always wanted a hot rod, but amateur status is an overstatement. I've purchased a 1940 Plymouth coupe with a 1968 Chevelle 4 door sedan frame. It's a driver with a lot work to be done. I want to take it to, "Back to the 50's" car show in St. Paul, MN in June. I need an aftermarket windshield wiper motor. Nothing fancy; slow, fast, intermittent and with a good wiring diagram. I'm sub novice at wiring also. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Wanikkan.
Hey, welcome and good choice on the car I have one too, just haven't worked on it for a while. You should find plenty of help here.
Welcome, post an intro over in the New to the H.A.M.B.? Introduce yourself here! section before the HAMB police get antsy. How is the car wired, stock chevelle, complete aftermarket or mish-mash? Do you want a wiper that fits the stock location, or are you willing to make changes to the cowl area? Is the cowl area stock? Do you want to go with an aftermarket deal or try to put together a junkyard deal? Wiring will depend on all of this.... A quick google search came up with this http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb...~S374144L0Z17412614242b~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z50000042b and this http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb...Z50000051h~Z5Z5Z5AAJLN~P224.95~~~~~~0000051~F
Welcome, a 40 Plymouth is a great car to work with. Tell us more about the "why you don't have a wiper motor" Shouldn't be too tuff to come up with something that will work. Dale Cleveland OH
You guys are great! And I thought this was going to be simple...grin So far I've got more questions than answers and I don't have the answers for all your questions. The wiring is something of a puzzle for me yet. I have to disconnect the battery when ever I shut the car off or the battery drains. Had one guy look at it so far. He noted one of the wires (white) was cut off the alternator. I'm really grateful for your help. I will have to do some research to determine just what I have and don't have. The only thing that is "68 Chevelle is the frame. Everything else is Plymouth except it is wired 12 volt and has a 327 in it. I don't doubt that at some point I'm going to have to find someone who is really good at diagnosing my wiring, but in the mean time, the more I can learn, the more I can help myself. Also, it really helps when I can understand what I'm being told, even if I don't end up doing it myself.
I'm going to suggest you may want to buy a wiring kit through one of the HAMB Alliance members if yours is a mess. Nothing can ruin a great road trip like burning down your ride because of faulty wiring. If your not sure you can do it, it would be worth while to pay someone to install a kit in your car. You might have more money in figuring out a wiring problem with what you have then you will have in a new wiring system. Before we could make a reasonable answer about your wipers, we would have to know what you have. Gene
Sounds like you are ready for a wiring kit as 50dodge4x4 said. If wiring scares you, this is THE BEST way to get the thing right and gain a karma advantage. Cut every wire in there out and save the terminal ends and connectors. Rewire the whole thing fresh and you will understand it all. There are plenty of threads on wiring kits for you to read. If you have just the vacuum motor missing and the arms and linkage remain, get the motor I posted and bolt it in. If everything is missing, you can find the OE stuff or do some searches here for wiper replacement and see how others have done it. There are 8 pages of threads with "wiper" in the ***le to start... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/search.php?searchid=13509708
to find your short start disconecting one componet at a time and when you hook the battery back up see if it sparks meaning there is a draw. simple and effective.
Welcome from a fellow ('37) Plymouth owner. First of all, update your 'location' to at least tell us what state you are from! "US" tells us yer afraid we're gonna come invade yer house! For a wiper, you can also go to a junk yard and look at rear wipers on hatchbacks like mitsubishi, or Chevy S-10 4X4's. They may not have intermittent, but otherwise what you need, and cheap. Good luck.
I'm gonna guess MN, WI or IA...not many people travel long distance to go to Back to the 50's...Rebel Wire makes a harness that's super easy to install, I put one into my '40 Plymouth over a weekend...
Wanikkan, Hello. I am new to the forum as well. I purchased a 1940 Plymouth Business Coupe sitting on a 1970 Buick GSX Ch***is. After taking the car apart, I opted for a new 2X3 ch***is, Mustang II front end with disc brakes, Ford 9" rear, 4 link, sway bar panard bar, and airbag suspension. It is truely amazing what some so called rodders do to these cars. We are building the car totally over, so I know what I have.
That is what I use on mine...well one an early model of these. used a bosch type WWF wiper motor. works great.
