I figured I'd ask you since you lived across the pond in the 80s... if I remember correctly... Music related: Do you have anything by the bands 9 Below 0 ... or Rip Rig and Panic? If so, will you copy it for me? I'm having 80s flashbacks. I'll trade you copies of my Japan collection...
Hate to **** in on this, but didn't Rip Rig & Panic appear on an episode of The Young Ones?? One of my all-time favorite shows...
Oh yeah, I've got lots of Rip, Rig and Panic, one of my favorite bands ever, the singer Neneh Cherry's, Don Cherry, the famous late free jazz trumpeter, daughter, she's also Eagle Eye Cherry's sister. I was never a big 9 Below Zero fan though, I don't have that stuff. RR&P's double LP, "God" is mindblowing. The band grew out of the anarcho funk outfit The Pop Group who were also incendiary albeit a tad naiive and idealistic. Lemme dig this **** up, I'll burn you some copies.
Gracie Think I might still have some 9 below 0, and a bunch of other power pop related stuff. Hmmm Nenah Cherry was hot hot hot! Anyone remember King Creole & the Coconuts? Not sure if I can tape it but a friend might be able to copy it from vinyl to CD, I'll check and see.
"I say doctor! I say what? I say doctor! I say what you want?" Haven't heard the name Kid Creole and the Coconuts since probably 1985. Haha! I'm gettin' old.
I put King Creola & the Coconuts! Man get back in the closet and put on your Melandie suit and Shellys shoes and go back to your sick 80's fantasies ( I remember the old photos you posted up here!)
I actually saw Nine below Zero play here in Norway in the early nineties. It was a sixties rythm & blues kind of gig with lots of Vespas on the outside and parkas on the inside.
Maybe he's confusing Kid Creole and Joe King Carasco. hahaha I have ALL the Young Ones that MTV played taped... its hilarious to watch... I taped them in about 1985... it is complete with all the 80's commercials and Martha Quinn interviewing Pat Benatar, and Peter Zaremba talking about how the Fleshtones got started... then there is some of the original Farm Aid... and lots of funny videos ... like Armoury Show, and UB40, and Paul Young... hahaha, and at the end of the video is the Alabama-Auburn game of that year. The 80s make me giggle.
For all you cliff richard's fans out there. They have the young one's released on DVD box set. all 13 episodes. Motorhead is my favorite guest band.
I think my favorite band appearance on The Young Ones was The Damned...as I recall, that was the same episode that had Alexei Sayle as a vampire, wasn't it? And while Rick was always my favorite of the foursome, Alexei had a great habit of stealing every scene he was in. Of course, early appearances by Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French were great, too. Those are two damn funny women, in my opinion. On a related note, anyone else know that Alexei Sayle now writes a monthly column for one of the British car mags? I can't remember if it's EVO, CAR, or Top Gear, but it's one of the three. The few I've read were pretty funny. Good to see he's still got it... Also, I had no idea there were 13 episodes of that show. Seems like I can remember 6 or 7, but I'm probably blending multiple episodes together. I might pick up the DVD, just to see if I've actually seen them all. Bet it's not near as entertaining as Gracie's old tapes, though!!
Damned episode was great (Damned are one of my favorite bands ever) "Uhmmm I'm a driving instructor...." Alexi Sayle locked in the bathroom... Sayle is one funny guy, used to love his show. Ever hear "Ello John got a a new motor?"
Gracie & Nads: don't overlook another Rip, Rig and Panic offshoot with Neneh Cherry, Float Up CP. by the way Nads, remember Blurt? ....I love cherry blossom polish....I love kiwi too... or Pigbag? speaking of Adrian Sherwood, I remember a very enthralling TACK>>HEAD show in Minneapolis a million years ago with a very young Doug Wimbish on b*** freaking everybody's **** out.
The damned episode was my favourite too.....they played a `b` side `nasty` if I remember correctly.......lost count the amount of times I went to see the Damned.....still going although with a vastly changed line-up....Vanians wife patricia morrison(originally with the sisters of mercy) is in the band now.....funny that Dan mentions Pigbag.....way back when... I can remember the BBC putting on a series of free concerts, to qualify for tickets you had to attend a lesser concert where you picked up the tickets....we had to endure one and a half hours of Pigbag so we could go watch Thin Lizzy the following week...I got to the Undertones as well by watching a lame set by a group called `the thompson twins`.....I bought Vanian a pint at a gig at the Hammersmith Palais once...he`s only a little bloke and couldn`t get near the bar.....oh the memories Monkey right...wheres that `Black album`....I need 17 minutes of `Curtain call`
That is such a cool idea, making people sit thru bad bands to get to good ones... Maybe Axle should make us all attend a ricer car show in order to get a spot at Viva next year....
Surf MOnkey: Vanian is into Harly 45's so I hear, guess he is in a club in London? We go see them every chance we get. Wife was pissed as we missed them playing in Chelmsford by 1 week a few years ago when we were visiting (and staying in Chelmsford!). Hm Undertones another one of my all time top bands! God it stinks of nostalgia in here.....
Dan, my God, you know Blurt???? I saw Blurt live in '81, they were amazing, drums, b*** and saxophone. "This Is My Royal Wedding Souvenir" is one absurd song, the drum beat makes me want to rip urinals outta the walls, they oughta update it for the recent betrothal of 'horse head' and 'elephant eared racist'. Apparently Blurt played the Victoriaville Music Festival up in Canada about ten years ago and some friends of mine who saw 'em said they were beyond description. Sure 'nuff Blurt defied all that was accepted as musicality. BTW, Mr. Pic***o your cover of the new Hop Up is lovely. I'll see you in Tejas next year.
