Which one of the little posts is "Coil" and which one is the "ignition" (starter switch?) They aint labeled.

I know the top (big) one is "hot" from the battery.

  2. I think you will find the small post closest to the block is the one you use. That's the case with my starters. I would also suggest you wait for a more confident answer though.

You can bench test it ... using a battery and booster cables, supply power to the unit then quickly cross the large post and the inner (right hand) post with a screwdriver. If it spins the starter, that it (just make sure you have a decent grasp of the starter, might be a bit of a jump when it spins).

Ooops, just re-read your post .... I guess I am saying that the inner (right hand) small post is for ignition (as in triggering the starter with the ignition key).

Jeeze, I think I have now officially confused myself now.

so it does indeed look like the right hand post is the "ignition" post.

I did the bench test, hot to the top post and bridged to the right hand posts causes the throwout to engage, but the starter did not SPIN. Hmmmm.. perhaps a bad starter motor.
